Portable recorder : advice needed

    Hi guys,

Im in the market for a portable recorder device and Im looking for some advice or references to any good pieces of kit out there.

I had a look at the Zooom H2 recoreder and Ive used one before. The thing isnt built amazingly or anything ( a bit plastic-ey for my liking, and no built in battery) but I thought that the sound off of it was great. Are there any better ones out there for around the same price?

The main thing Im looking for is recording quality. I dont really care about features. That said, I am not a sound engineer, and I only really want a device to record ideas down so I dont forget them. Something with a built in battery would be great but its not essential. And I need something that can connect to a mac so I could potentially put stuff up on the web or send ideas to band mates...that sort of thing. Also, I need a portable stand alone device. Ive been advised that getting an m-box and a decent mic would be the better route to go, but unfortunately I dont have my own laptop. I have access to one, but I dont have the luxury of being able to take it with me whenever I want!

I reckoned that as Im not all that knowledgable on the subject I would ask people with more experience than me! so many many thanks in advance!

Oh and my budget is E250 at a stretch, preferrably lower!:D

I thought about getting one of those zoom things as well, but they are very expensive for what you get I think. Have you thought about just plugging in to laptop/PC and just recording straight from mixer. Quality is pretty good.

For demos I just use the Nokia phone, not great quality but will capture adequately something that might enter my head. If it's any good I can listen back to it and decide to record it properly.

it's probably a little above budget (not sure what you'd pay around town/interweb) at the moment but I bought one of these puppys a while back:

I use it for field recordings both with the built in mics and external omnis. It's been around the world with me at this stage (even used it to record Wallabies having dinner in Australia) and I've been very happy with the results.

Then again, I bought a 16GB SanDisk mp3 player (ipod size) last week that has a built in mic and that would probably be fine for rough work/ideas and cost 130 in harvey norman

I use a creative vision M which can record in MP3 and if its just something to grab a live gig or drop on the table at a session it does exactly what it say on the tin.

I also use it to drop songwriting ideas onto something so as to grab the moment 'so to speak'

You'll get one off ebay for between €50 and €100 second hand
