Well if you have not ridden one then you defo wont understand there is just something a cervelo has that no other bike can give you but thats my opinion anyway.

S2 2010 looks good provided you don't cycle in front of a white background

Hmmmmm, I used to think the same, but now I'm not so sure. Yes they are great bikes, I really like the brand image, the Cervelo Test Team etc BUT I do think there are worthy alternatives.

You can get a custom handbuilt Italian frame made for the same money as an R3 frame, which will look ace, fit like a glove and yes, ride as good or better than a Cervelo. Better bang for your buck in my books.

Don't be silly Murph. Nothing can deliver the same ethereal ride quality, the same epic combination of lateral stiffness and vertical compliance, the same sense that every-pedal-stroke-is-converted-to-forward-motion-and-I-really-shouldn't-have-but-I-did-and-I-love-it as a Cervelo.

Next you'll be suggesting that ceramic wheel bearings don't allow you to sustain at least two gears higher on your favourite climb.

I agree for the more expensive Cervelo framesets, but bang for buck the S1 seems hard to beat.

You're right Lumen, I dont know what came over me, must be magnesium wheel deprivation syndrome ....

I actually got quite close to buying one from Slane (IIRC), and they talked me out of it.

The S1 is not an all-round road bike, it's a race bike. They don't sell very many because whilst it has proper pro racing pedigree, not many people want to buy a €3000 (or whatever) bike which shakes them to pieces on rough roads compared to a similarly priced carbon bike.

That said, I haven't ridden it, and one man's crotch rocket is another man's torture device.

Current frame price aint bad for the 2009 S1, just over €1,000, decent paint scheme too, providing you want a race bike.

I saw the Competitive Cyclist review where they said that if you're primarily a racer, the S series is the way to go, and if you're a leisure rider who also races, the R series are the ones to have.

Having said that, I have a perverse sense of comfort vs fun (hence Fireblade rather than VFR) and also have nascent ambitions to race at some point (who doesn't on here).

And yet, if I were dropping 3 large on a bike, my heart would turn more towards something Italian, but damn that Cervélo marketing is effective. Pro race pedigree, for 2ish k? Ooh, suits me.

Now would be a good time for someone who's actually owned/ridden a Soloist/S1 to chime in.

I have had a S1 and i have had carbon frames that have given me a rough ride but its true if you want a machine thats puts power to the road the S1 is the way to go hence the reason im going to buy a new one not sure if it will be 2010 im thinking 2009 one is alot nicer.

How would you rate the overall ride of the S1 on a harshness scale of 1 to 10?

Depends on the roads but most normal road with a fair surface i would rate a 5 im comparing this to a dolan i road this year and it was comfortable but the frame was like butter every time i put the power down it was crap compared to the S1

Spot on, in fact a lad called Carlos Sastre won a bit of a Leisure Ride in France last year mostly on an R3 SL.

Honestly the marketing BS from these places !

Tempted with the S1 myself because its geometry is identical to the R3 SL. If I got the same size frame I would have a very fine winter bike with an identical fit to my race bike, which is my current holy grail. I just can't seem to get my 51cm Cervelo to line up the same as my 54cm Trek 5500, I'm sure its possible with different stems etc... but I just can't get it right. Wonder will Slane drop the price of the S1 2009 when the new one is out a while ?

How would the S1 compare to other aluminium frames. Like the look of this frame and it seems like great value and as i already have a lapierre alu frame which i find reasonably comfortable and there might not be much difference in the ride?

It’s hard to explain I have been on allot of different materials from Carbon to aluminum& titanium but I have never been on a bike that is so responsive that’s is not all that heavy and handles like no other bike I have been on. It’s a race machine and for value for money worth it a good set of wheels make the bike and lets not forget this bike has won some of the biggest races in the world.

Oh yeah i do agree but in the day an age that is Carbon Carbon and wait more carbon to see alum still been able to do well and still when its reviewed on good things are said how many frames do you that are still made 9 years on and still being called a pure race machine the only thing that has changed is the fork.

Indeed, but the reason they don't sell that well is that the market for "race bikes" is much larger than the market for "bikes that are raced".

If the S1 is so good, why don't they sell very many? Because people want speed and comfort, and a well designed carbon frame means you don't have to sacrifice one for the other.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan. :)

    @ crashoveroid

Just curious, are you picking the S1 based on price? If not, surely the S2 and/or R3 offer you a better option, unless you're set on avoiding carbon.

Im not a fan of Carbon i dont really like it and with the current climate and based on past experiance the S1 one seems the way to go for me i would rather invest in a really good groupset and wheels

Well if you happen to spot a 51cm S1 or the Soloist Team as it was known previously be sure to let me know. Not sure I could justify 1k on another frame after what I spent renovating the trek, but if I saw a secondhand one cheaper I am sure that my mind could concoct some excuse as to why I must have one...

Thanks for that Raam, think that ones a 48 (the owner must be very flexible). I love that bike but thats the Carbon, bit pricey for a winter bike ! I was torn between that and the R3SL last year, nice color.

Damn you crashoveroid. You go put up a post about a Cervelo S1 the day after I ride my refurbed trek winter bike for the first time and decide that its so different to my Cervelo R3 SL that it will take weeks to get used to it every time I swap around. So I start thinking how great it would be to have a training bike that is identical to my race bike, and lo and behold you come along with your big mouth and mention the S1 and thanks to the power of the internet I discover that its the exact same size, dimensions and geometry as my race machine.

Fast forward a few weeks and I have located a 2010 model, decided to fit it out in the Sram Rival/Red combo that was on the Trek and ta'da identical training machine and race machine. But no... wait... the R3 SL has Dura Ace, that won't do, it will feel too different, so another good samaritan points out that Merlin Cycles are having a sale and I end up getting Sram Red (the Dura Ace goes on the trek now).

And thats the story of how I became bankrupt. I'm not coming on these forums anymore, you are all a bad influence.

Anyway, for those interested in the 2010 S1 and finding it hard to get decent pics online, here are some indoor shots of the bike in the flesh that I took for some of the guys on the Cervelo Forums... I think I must nearly be the first guy in the world with one because Cervelo say they are not available until year end and I had to post the pics because people were sending me PM's calling me a liar !

Wow, looks amazing Quigs! Photos look much better than the online ones.

You can make back the money by letting people on here drool over it and charge for the pleasure. I reckon Lumen has wracked up a few hundred euro already.

I particularly like the downtube nostrils. They make me want to do this.

Putting SRAM Red on an alloy training bike is wonderfully mad.

Quigs, I think you and I must be using the phrase "winter bike" to mean different things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Ah but the Sram Red is for my other Cervelo, the S1 will be getting Sram Rival (with a Sram Red Crank). I'll stick a few build pics up when done, on hols next week so not sure if I will have it done before then.

The color scheme is being panned on the Cervelo forums, but I reckon it looks ok. I'd prefer all black, but I get a hard enough time from the other half about the fact that all my bikes look the same. Sadly if this winter goes as planned then this bike will be destroyed in no time. Better this than the much more expensive R3 SL I guess, at least the S1 will be less likely to shatter into matchsticks the first time I hurtle into the tarmac on some icy country laneway. Every bearing in my R3 has been replaced lately, the wet summer has mean replacements to my headset, wheel hubs, pedal axles, cassette body, bottom bracket and all cable inners and outers. Even though, or perhaps because I washed the bike every time it went out in the rain.

So thats all the equipment sorted (I reckon the S1 will be race worthy if need be when done, it did after all win a number of classics in its day). Now all I need is about 10,000km hard cycling, an extra 2 hours sleep a night, a better diet, 6kg weight loss off the belly, 15% more power, a pair of balls to let me go down hills quickly in bunches and a racing brain and I will be sorted for the start of the season. It almost seems too easy.

Just get it resprayed in gloss black next Spring. Cervelo decals can't be that hard to source.
