    Just wondering about this. I have just asked my boss for holidays and have been told I have not got enough left, because 5 of the 20 days are reserved for Christmas. Is this common practice?

    It might not be standard, but it's not unheard of. Companies control (within reason) what days you take off. There's a recent thread in the work problems forum where someone has to take 10 of his/her 20 days when the office closes, so only can use half their leave when they want to.

    Hi Eoin, yup that was me... I get 20 days holidays per year, 10 I have to take when the comp closes in the summer for the builders holidays and 5 I have to keep for Xmas, leaves me with 5 for the rest of the year... still it could be a lot worse and plus there's always bank holidays to look forward to:)

    This is quite normal. I know a company where you had to take 5 days holiday within the first 4 months of the year, then 10 days within the next 4 months and the final 5 days within the final 4 months.

    The days had to all be taken together, no "floating" days. The company was open over Christmas (including Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve).

    So it could be worse OP!

    Should have been made clear in your contract, have you checked to see whether this was included? If not you can make a case to take them at another time (I think), although unless you really need the days it's generally not worth stirring the ****...

    As I understand it, you have absolutely no right to take days off whenever you want. The employer has to be reasonable, but ultimately have the final say.

    I don't think it need to be in the contract, but should be detailed in an employee handbook / HR policy.

    @jobucks - that sucks :(
