Converting Triple to Double

Hi. I am going to convert a triple groupset to a double, for various different reasons.

Am I correct in thinking that if I stay with same type (Ultegra SL in this case) that I only need a new front deraileur and new shifters/brake levers and crankset.

AFAIK you don't need to change shifters or FD.

Have you considered just removing the granny ring and changing your other chainrings?

I'm finding 50/38+11-25 a bit wierd after the triple. I seem to be always crossed in either of the rings, whereas on the triple I mostly just stayed in the big ring. I've no idea why.

Sounds about right - shifters will be the priciest part of the job, but might be got at a discount now that the new ultegra is out. If you're interested I might be selling an Ultegra SL compact chainset in the near future (if CRC get their house in order soon).

Edit: didn't know you could use triple shifters on a double - interesting

Apart from adjusting the chain you may need to change both deraileurs as you prob have a long cage fitted at the rear, it will work however but won't be as smooth so the decision is yours,

don't think you need to change trom a triple to double STI Ultegra lever as think their cross compatible and simply won't shift when pressure is applied but will give extra travel obviously, By all accounts though the best man to ask is Mr. skeffington!

    Thanks folks.

I will probably change all so, as I want to be able to shift easily. No point in doing half a job.

@Che - If the compact chainset is unmarked and is SL, then I would be interested in striking a deal with you on it.

    Thanks

@ Lumen - That's pretty good, just adjust the limits and play on with the triple shifters, handy.

@ ROK ON - It's spotless: I'm neurotic pretty fastidious about keeping my rides in top condition - I'll throw you a PM when I've me new cranks on and we can figure out the details
