    Is it motorway or dual carriageway ie can you cycle on it?

    Motorway so no. I don't know why you would want to either way though, it is longer than alternative routes on smaller roads that would be more pleasant.

    Definety a motorway, no cyclists! I agree with blorg too, the regional roads around Carlow are much better. I know that the by pass, although quicker than going thru Carlow, is about 10 miles onto my journey to Dublin

    Indeed, unless you can cycle at 120km/h you are unlikely to make back the extra distance involved :) I believe when originally opened it was actually designated the N9 and there was a short period you could cycle on it, but it has since been re-designated as a motorway. Came back up that way from Waterford today.
