I believe boxing to be the greatest sport of all.It tests ones physical and mental strength to the limits and the most skillful usually comes out on top.Give your views.....

wouldnt MMA be above that - as its a more physical (albeit shorter fight)

I'd have thought running myself, but if you are comparing boxing and mma its gotta be mma all day long.

MMA I dont know much about but I believe to bit a bit too technical.Boxing on the other hand has lots of skill involved and is a more simpler form of 1 v 1.

In terms of combat sports, MMA is more pure.

Running in my opinion doesnt fully bring out that inner strength you need when your facing your opponent and losing and you need to dig deep or get knocked out!

What exactly makes this better than boxing.

It is purer in the sense that boxing is much more restricted in what you are able to do and MMA incorporates more ranges of combat. You asked what was the purest. "Better" is subjective.

You obviously have never led a race with 200m to go with and 4 or 5 other runners breathing down your neck like a pack of wild animals ready to strike. Its a different type of fear. The chase. The result may not be death but in relative terms losing a race that means the world to you can for a while feel like a death. That requires inner strength to keep going when your body and mind are screaming at you to stop. That can be applied to most sports. The absence of physical violence doesn't mean the requirement for inner strength is diminished. As most sports people will tell, the biggest challenge or rival you will face is yourself.

MMA (specifically UFC rules, as opposed to pride, etc) I think, is the purest form of non-team sport.

Mentally, it requires the application of many different fighting and defence skills over longer rounds (5 mins instead of 3).
Physically, well, that needs to explanation..

I've been following MMA since the early days and I'm glad that the sport has evolved into what it is today. Because let's face it, it wasn't always a sport. But now, not only is it a sport, it could very well be the 'purest' sport.

Pride's rules were much looser than UFC's. Soccer kicks to a downed opponent?

I guess it's all down to what you describe as pure sport. For me, it's the most rawest possible form, and I think combat sports are as raw as it gets.

Old school vale tudo rules would be the most rawest form of combat sport, and on that premise - probably the most purest.
