    Hi folks,

would appreciate some advice on the enclosed - would you think this is good value? one of ye probably pre owned it?? how much of a difference would this be to say a Focus Cayo which seems to be the favoured bike round here

    thanks in advance

Hard to tell if its good value when you don't list a price..... I'd pay 600 tops if I was feeling generous, although 550 would be more like it. The Claud Butler carbon frame is heavy.. held one in my hands. Didn't knock my socks off, that doesn't mean its not a fine bike but its not worth spending big money on.

600 for that! more like 7-800 if its in mint condition, yeah those claud butlers absolultey wreck my head (previous bad experience) and the carbon frame does indeed seem heavier than the comparible trek but it is a full carbon composite frame all the same with what looks to be a tiagra group set, not brilliant but not bad!

I had a look in this shop recently (They do not have a web site)

    J.J. O'Carroll
    10 James Street
    Tipperary

They have the 2009 Claud Butler Torino reduced to €1150.

Beautiful bike, very well finished and easily as light as my Focus Cayo.

I would have bought it but I needed a triple, or a compact at the very least.

It took a friend of mine 5 months to sell a Specialized Tarmac full carbon, Dura Ace/Ultegra Mix and Campy Eurus wheels, it was up here on adverts. He was looking for 1000 and took 850. The Claude Butler is inferior. If you pay 1000 for that.... well lets just say you won't be getting good value. Tiagra all round ? Bargain basement Mavic rims ? Sure its all perfectly functional, but 1000 ? That would be about right for it brand new in my view, but carbon bikes lose a lot of value secondhand. Although cycling is in at the moment keeping prices up. The arse will fall out of that as soon as the evenings get shorter as it always does. There are better regarded and better speced bikes like the focus for not a lot more cash. But hey its your cash, if you want the bike go for it. If you put some big mileage onto it and get your ass out there cycling then it will be worth if even if it costs you 5000.

Slightly better specced machine here... for a couple of hundred more.

Check out wiggle, planet x and chainreactioncycles for similar specced machines for decent money. Sales usually start in September.

I take it you are talking about the ribble. In which case I would agree. I would go for this, not much more than the asking on the Claude Butler, better spec with the Shimano 105 parts, better looking and better regarded (FOCUS appear to have developed a good name these days, the association with a pro tour team and the sheer volume of these being shipped by wiggle helps). Its new, which means no wear on parts so less likelihood of needing new chains, headsets, tires, bottom brackets etc... any time soon. Also its not a Claude Butler. So thats nice.

    That's mine :D

Two spins so far, a 50k and a 25k this evening. The Cayo is the single best purchase i have made in a long time.

If funds can stretch, go for it.
