Mr. Binman workers are now into their 7th week of a strike, which started because of the dreadful conditions that the employees are forced to work under. Employees that are doing very similar jobs are working for very different rates of pay e.g. In some cases there are discrepancies of over 200 euro for drivers doing the same job and workers working within the plant doing similar work are on different rates of pay.

Also, there are some workers working for just above the minimum wage, not only this but some workers have to work 50 hours before they are paid overtime rates, moreover, employees overtime rates are below their normal rate of pay.

Added to all this, the workers were asked to take pay cuts which amount to between 10% – 49% depending on the wages they are earning, the company director arrived in his 09 BMW to tell employees that these pay cuts were due to the economic crisis that we are in at the moment. A pay cut, which incidentally was implemented without the employees consent. This is illegal, under the Payment of wages act 1991. All this said from a company who boasts: “There’s no shortage of money coursing through the coffers of Mr. Binman these days.” - Farmer’s Journal, 27th June 2009

If this is not shocking enough, here is what Mr. Martin Sheahan ( Mr. Binman) has to say about his staff:
“I’ve probably only sacked five guys in my life. The Paddy is the best man in the world when he goes abroad to work but he’s a different man at home. I’ve about 100 non- national staff here to keep manners on the Paddys. The unions tried to come in here but they got two men. I consider myself the union here. We’ve looked after lads that have got married, had kids, divorces, gone to jail, and had bereavements. But the way the law has gone you can’t say boo to an employee anymore” – Farmer’s Journal, 27th June 2009

Although, his views do not seem surprising considering that Mr. Martin Sheahan expects his employees to handle hospital waste e.g. used, infected material, syringes etc, even though there are strict safety regulations that need to be adhered to. To date, not one employee has been inoculated against infection.

The employees in the south east region are on a legal trade union strike, yet Martin Sheahan refuses to speak to the union or the LRC, he is also bussing in strike breakers of foreign nationalities to do the work of honest workers, both national and foreign nationals, who are on strike for a fair days pay, for a fair days work. This company who claim to be losing money at this time not only have an annual turnover of 52 million euro but are also investing 30 million euro in a new plant in Foynes, Co. Limerick.

This is the thanks that these employees get for helping to build the Mr. Binman business to the flourishing level it is at within the south east.

If you would like to support the Mr. Binman strikers, there is a march at 12:00 on Thursday 9th July starting at the Clearpoint Depot, Carrick on Suir, Co. Tipperary. Your presence would be greatly appreciated.

We had a Saleman around in the past few days and were considering changing over to Mr. Binman - no fcuking way now!!!

There is a couple picketing Mr Binman in Clonmel now for months. Just the two of them. None of the other workers seem to be bothered.

Yea, seems the same in Ballyneety, all the trucks just drive past them into the place as if they weren't there. Seems like there are only a few on strike, don't even know if they work there cos they park down the road and walk up to the place. They started about a months or 2 ago.
