Hey everyone! In a bit of a dilemma as to which subjects to pick for second year and was hoping some of you could give me the benefit of your experience. I would prefer to do the harder subjects this year and keep the easier ones for my final year. I was hoping that those of you who already have second year under your belt could advise me as to which subjects to avoid at all costs and which you would recommend to go for. A big big thank you to anyone who replies!:)

    Hey

You should really decide what kind of area that you think you would like - tax and IP are emerging areas. Human Rights is interesting but it is a vocation and not a choice.

I would recommend, provided you studied Law of Torts in 1st year:

    Second Year
    - Law of Property [Comp]
    - Legal Skills and Analysis [Comp]
    - Financial Transactions [v relevant - banking regulation, NAMA]
    - Law of the EU [almost as good as complulsory]
    - Administrative Law [needed for Kings Inn]
    - Commercial Law

    Third Year ]/B]
    - Law of Equity [Comp]
    - Company Law [Comp]
    - Moot Court [Comp]
    - Jurisprudence [Comp]
    - Revenue Law [growing area - UCC only college to have a Tax module]
    - IT Law [IP, Copyright etc is hugely emerging area]

Drop me a PM if you have any specific quests

I'm sure Revenue Law is on a Friday morning though. Which is somewhat unnatural.

Any thoughts on medical law for 3rd year subject? Good idea or bad?

It depends on whether you're looking to get the best results out of the subjects at hand or tailoring your choices towards a career in a certain area of law. Brehayes there gave an excellent selection of subjects for people looking to go work in the corporate field. My own interest is in Human Rights, so I studied that, Family and Medical, as well as the compulsory areas for Kings Inn (Company, Admin and Evidence). Looking back I would have chosen Public International but hindsight is a great thing and all that.

It's good to get the compulsory ones out of the way early, try to leave one you enjoy for final year or one you know will be a handy marker. For me that was Medical and HR, but Family or Evidence would be quite interesting too. It all depends on whether or not you have a long term plan and if so what it is.

Just picking my own modules at the moment.

EU law is compulsory for us anyway. Financial Transactions doesn't appear to be an option?

I've decided upon Admin and Commercial but I'm unsure of what to do for my third elective. I'm leaning towards Evidence. Any suggestions?

Third elective will have consist of one of the following:
Evidence, Public Int, Welfare, HR, IT or Environmental.

Well I think im going to go down the solicitor route in future rather than study to be a barrister. Does this mean that I dont have to do administrative and evidence? As far as I know you dont have to do any specific subjects to further on to be a solicitor but please correct me if im wrong! If this is the case, are there any particular subjects which you found easier or harder? Bearing in mind factors like good lecturers etc. For example knowing that Gwynn Morgan is doing administrative puts me right off. His half of constitutional was painful to say the least.

To Keith; yeah evidence is very interesting, I'd recommend it. Environmental is a handy marker, they give you most of the exam like.

As for what's necessary to be a solicitor, I'm pretty sure it's company, EU and the rest are compulsory. There was talk of Family and Evidence becoming necessary but I'm not sure; both are worth doing though anyway as they are interesting and form a big part of the law outside the corporate field.

Admin isn't too bad, bear in mind that he gives all the notes out before the lectures so you don't even need to go to them. It's handy cos Mondays are pretty much days off if I remember correctly. You just need to study the bejaysus out of 5 or 6 topics and you've got a handy mark and you're covered for the Inns. Painful is a good description though.
