I did shotokan katate for 12 years but have not been training for the past two years. As I am returning to college this year (UCD) I was wondering if I would be better off starting a new type of martial art - I like some of the formal, traditional aspects of karate but would like to do more sparring (my club was always too kata focused for my liking and we rarely ever sparred)?
Can you suggest any other martial art that wouldn't be too much of a culture shock from karate and yet involve more sparring?

    Thanks in advance!

I was going to say Judo also. There's loads of Martial Arts clubs in UCD (see here http://www.ucd.ie/sport/clublist.htm) including Shotokan. There's also Ninjutsu, Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do. Best thing is to give all of them a try and pick the one(s) you like the most.

    Good Luck.

    Taekwon-Do!
There's a club in UCD. I used to be in touch with the lads who ran it but haven't heard much from them since.
    It's not a bad club.

UCD have a large and well regarded Judo club if you're a student I think it's free to train.

Its also got probably one of the best Judo coach's in Ireland - Paul Cummins.

If its sparring/randori you want you'll get plenty of it with Paul.

UCD has an MMA club. I believe it was the first University MMA club. The judo club seems brilliant but as I train in my mother art on the same say never got the chance to train. UCD also offers freestyle wrestling and boxing.
