I was just told by someone that the grant money won't be released until mid october/november. This is concerning the donegal county council grants, but i think the grants are released all at the same time, i could be wrong though.

But the main point of my post, is to ask when do the grants usually get released? I start university in 2 weeks, and i havent even recieved a letter confirming I will recieve a grant yet, but if it is the case that the money won't be out until mid october/november what am supposed to do for monry until then? I'm expecting a full grant aswell.

I might be wrong because I'm not too sure how the system works, but they know when the colleges start back, and they knew there was going to be an increse in applications this year, so why can't they have the money ready on time?

So when does the grant cheques usually get released?

    Thanks!

Dates depend on whether you're doing a 2 year/3 year cert/ordinary degree course or an ab-initio (3/4year honours degree) -

For cert / ordinary degree the dates should be :

    17th October 2009 9th January 2010 3rd April 2010
    14th November 2009 6th February 2010 1st May 2010
    12th December 2009 6th March 2010 29th May 2010

F or an an honours degree the payments come in 3 times per year, approx Oct/Nov for 1st instalment, Dec/Jan for 2nd instalment and Mar/Apr for 3rd instalment.

Could be a difference for your college tho

Unfortunately many county councils are ALWAYS late in paying the grant.

I received the grant from 2001-2006. My uni used to post a list on a notice board of when grant cheques arrived. Some councils paid by early October (and on time for subsequent installments), but several still had not paid by late November. It was always the same ones that were late with payments.

One year I did not receive my first installment until January - despite having had confirmation of grant approval since September.

In my experience South Dublin Co Co were always the latest. When I rang to complain the year I received my first payment so late they said "what do you expect - we have such a large number of areas such as Tallaght and Clondalkin (they did actually mention these areas!) with high applicant numbers so we're under greater pressure".

They just don't seem to get the hassle late payments cause.
