Appealing NCT failure - Any experiences?

Has anyone here got experience with appealing NCT results? My mum's car failed due to an apparent steering rack issue but the dealer looked at it and felt it was okay.

Of course they'll replace the part if she likes, at a cost of 350 which seems like stupid money to spent on a 1995 car.

She rang up the NCTS who basically gave her a "computer says no" type response and the only info I can find on their website is that you should speak to the test center supervisor if you are unhappy with the outcome.

Is there anything I can do?

I suppose you could speak to the test center supervisor....

Get a report from the garage to say there's no fault present!

Sounds odd. What exactly was the problem they found

Thanks folks, I'll speak to the garage about that then get on to the supervisor.

mickdw, The fault is, from memory, something to do with a worn rack and pinion linkage. I know only the basics about cars though so don't hold me to it!

Maybe bring it to a different garage or a different NCT centre for other opinions

Non runner, you can't book a test in a different centre, unless you wait over 30 days and perfrom a full retest again.

==Go back to the center were the test was done, speak to the team leader or manager, explain to them, that you brought the car to your garage, and that they can't find anything wrong with it.

You could also ask them, simply to ring your garage, and explain to them exactly what the problem is.

If all that fails, you can ask for appael form, which you will have to fill out, and send to the NCTs head office in Citywest/Dublin.

But I don't think, it will go that far, such issues are usually resolved locally.
