Ballinrobe is a super course. Very long and super greens. No better in the West.

I have booked a place to stay in Galway City, so Ballinrobe might be a bit to far to travel from Galway,
I tried to find about the Christy O Connor Galway Bay Golf Resort course, but seems to be closed can't get through on phone,
Any other good course within 10-15 miles of Galway City

    hi castle,
try cregmore, barna, athenry, gort, galway(not galway bay thats closed to the public at the mo). closest is galway in salthill but pricey at weekend, best best is cregmore or athenry about 40 euro each

i wouldnt waste your time playin athenry, unless u get it cheap on an open day, not a great lay out in my own opinion. have to say that i think ballinrobe is definately worth the spin.

    hi castle,
Actually it was orginally designed by Alistair mackensie who also designed amongst others Augusta (with Bobby Jones) cypress point and royal melbourne. There is a pic of him in the lobby. Christy used to play there and grew up around the corner. My dad was a member for quiet a few years and told me many stories about playin with his dad and both christy o connor jnr and snr. Tight course and 4 of the greens are in poor condition.

Playing Ballinrobe later today - hope I can have a half decent round & not have to hack my way around all 18 holes.
Will report back on course condition afterwards.

Edit on Sat after playing Friday:

Its a really nice course, and if the open days remain at that price, €20, I'll definitely play it again. Didn't really know where I was going, though it did help having 2 local lady members in our 4-ball to show us the way.
They were pretty decent players too.

Anyway, as for my day, not great, too many wild shots & a few lost balls in heavy stuff. Did manage one par 4 though - left second shot short & right on a bank, chipped to 4 feet & sank the putt :-)

Only negatives were a very slow group in front of us, and a very impatient group behind, who tee'd off on a par 3 before we'd cleared the green area (we were crossing just behind to go to next tee).
Also, some of the greens were a little bumpy, they'd been spiked & sanded, probably a couple of weeks ago due to the bad weather, but some of them hadn't fully recovered yet.

Ballinrobe is playable all year round and as a result the greens are spiked every year around about this time. The greens have recovered over the last week. The course at €20 - €25 per round represents supreme value for money. The course is challenging, especially of white tees. The par3s are all over 150 metres. The par 5 8th has a dogleg on the first shot, water on the 2nd shot and bunkers protecting the green and is usually played into the wind. What a hole!!. The par 4 10th index 2, whilst straight has out of bounds on the left and water on 3 sides of the green. The par 5 18th index 18 whilst not that long has a huge weeping willow tree in front of the green. Go around it? Go over it? You will not go through it. Contact Bernie Murphy at the course 094 9541118 and she can arrange societies, accomodation, parties, meals, etc,.
