so im in the market for a nice side by side to go along in the safe with my o/u.

i was looking at a few different ones at the weekend and the older type sbs that dont have the pistol grip seem to be nice and quite traditional. a lot of them seem to be spanish made.

i also stumbled upon the new sbs baikals on the internet and they see, to be quite cheap for brand new guns. are they any good does anyone know?

I'm not sure about the sbs but I remember my old baikel o/u used to weight a ton. you wouldn't notice until you gave the day hunting with it. but a lot of the older lads are very fond of the baikel. they're russian if you didn't already know.

They are not "nice" shotguns. They are simple work horses. Got a fairly new one for my kids. The stock is very short and I think the front trigger is a bit lightly adjusted. That's the only bad points.
Never heard of one going wrong, seen a few Baikal O/U's going wrong though.
The sbs looks to have strong barrels and I wouldn't mind using it as a game gun. Pity it doesn't have ejectors.

Having handled both (but far from an expert on shotguns) I'd say for the money on a new Baikal, I'd take a second-hand AYA no. 4. Far nicer gun in my opinion. Balances better, nice enough triggers and nice build quality. I'm going to try pick one up for myself for game shooting.

I looked at it (baikal) in a shop once...

I thought it was really ugly looking but probably it has nothing to do with functionality.

If you had an O/U I wonder how you'd react to a curved barrel rib.

the curve was quite pronounced It felt like the barrels were pointing high when I could see the bead...

    I might be wrong...
