I'm starting first year in 2 weeks doing science. I've so many questions i need answered and was wondering if you guys could help?

    1. What's the general atmosphere like around the university and Galway itself?

    2. Student nitelife-very important, where the main places for 1st years to hang out, heard about Corrib Village but renting a house I think about 5 minutes away from there.

    3. How much?, generally not including rent how much would I spend a week in Galway, I'll only be there during the week, going home at the weekends. I'll probaly be living soley on the grant, is it possible?

    4. Are lecturerers and staff etc approachable or do they have a snob factor about them?

    5. How easy is it to get to know new people, not going down on my own, renting with a few freinds but still want to get to know new people.

    6. Whats the work load like? I'm doing science, will there be much time for socialising?

    7. And finally, how much fun is NUIG for a 1st year?

If you could answer any of these questions it would be great, thanks :D

ok,i'll answer the best i can.......

    1. Unreal! Galway is just big enough 2 feel like an adventure and small enuf so u won't get lost( drunken nites aside!) once u get from ure accomodation 2 eyre square ure sorted!
Student capital of ireland, the town wud be quiet without the students, friendly, exciting, and you'll love every moment!
its the only place in ireland were i actually feel "irish"!

    2. Corrib Village- Nice 2 go 2, nice 2 leave, amazing parties, the random funny icidents, the characters, rag week was OTT last year, u may hav heard, so hence it could be much sedate this year, but i advise u go visit corrib with ure mates on saturday 13th, coz last year the whole place was hysterical,200 windows broke, my NEW room was covered in CO2:mad::eek:

places to go 4 nitelife GPO,CUBA, and karma TIC CILL E(best trad pub, tiny but atmospheric!)

GPO is the main go to club 4 1st years, most people are snobby and say "i'd never be seen in that barn" but truth be told you'll always end there and reluctantly say 2 ureself "that place was class!";)

don't 4get the college bar, decent food, drink at comparitively low prices, sum decent bands, and plenty of memories

    3. sorry can't say i know 2 much on this, but corrib village double room(no ensuite) was 4200 last year, i got the grant last year, but left my course so i'm starting again in 1st commerce this year ,so no grant this year, i say use the cantten 2 save loads, the food is amazing 4 the price u get it at!:o

4 ok, i did science 4 2008-2009 so i can give u all the dirty details on the lecturers

Lectureres CAN be helpful; asking them after lectures is the way 2 go(don' tbe shy!):) but don't expect them 2 give out buddha style advise and guidance at exam time if ure turning up 2 only 1 in 10 lectures after one too many bottles of HUZZAR ,
u mite think lecturers don't care(or know) who's in their class , but soon they'll start 2 see familiar faces in on friday mornings
(whisper(by the way thur nite are rrly good!;):D)and these are the ones who'll win at exam time! a lecturer won't want 2 know if he hasnt seen u in any of his her lectures!

if u do chemistry , you'll have tim higgins who is so sound and helpful(he's ateddy bear:pac:) plus concise!

unlike this other einstein fello you'll have in biology, he's UTTERLY eccentric, he looks like the guy off the old weetos cereal, he is impossible 2 listen 2 and rambles 4 ages(not in a good way), i cant remember his name, he had the most terrible german accent ever! his lectures were "catch up on sleep , recount stories from last nite" time, throw airplanes!
    Dreadful!

everybody in the earth sciences is cool, eve+ tiernan are cool, paul's cool,(you'll know the names, if u do earth and ocean sciences as a module!)

my advise go 2 lectures, be organised, use blackboard!

(loads of time 2 socialise, science hours are bout 20-25 a week(that includes labs of 3 hours):)

    5. I'll sum the last few q's up,

my advise, THROW URESELF INTO THE MIX! U HAVE2.

unlike secondary school, people will have little preconceptions, don't be afraid 2 start up a convo with sum randomner in ure year, chancers u mite see them only once or twice again, so don't be afraid if u make an eejit of ureself!

i'm a fairly reserved fella and i got 2 know loads of people, most of who i keep in regular contact even tho i'm doin a different course this year!

just remember 2 break out of ure group and mix with others otherwise it'll begin 2 feel like groundhog day(2nd level) where cliques build!

thats about all, its what u make it really!

    now i'm off 2 make a cup of tay!:D

im bored so might aswell answer these

    1. the atmosphere around the city is very laid back its the most relaxed city iv every been to in Ireland anyway and theres alway craic going on somewhere!
    2. Corrib village is very good for parties esp block parties but if it rains there really wont be much on! Generally what most people go to is GPO on monday, CPs or Cuba on wednesday and generally everywhere is good thursday!
    3. Last year i lived up 7 days a week and lived on about 80 -90e it was usually 30-40 on food then the rest on going out or bits and pieces for college
    4. honestly i never really approached a lecturerer you generally dont need to but they all seem friendly enough
    5. I went on my own last year, knew nobody and got to know plenty of people , didnt join clubs or societies so you would prob meet loads more that way too
    6. If your doing science your whole year will be about socialising nobody takes it too seriously esp 1st term as we didnt really have xmas exams! its 16 hours a week of lectures, 3 hour chem lab but thats usually only hour and a half, 2 hours of physics and 2 hours of biology! you really will rarely stay in labs till the end
    7. 1st year in NUIG will prob be the best fun youl ever have and DO NOT miss out the first night of corrib and make sure your down there for all of rag week, it has to be seen to be believed....
