Anyone see this? What a total embarrassment for RTE and Ireland. The guy barely knows his stuff, seems to permanently have his eye off the ball (nearly 24 hours after Ted Kennedy died, Bird's package came from San Francisco!) and then yesterday looked more like a wino than the cream of RTE's journalistic crop!

This was always going to have been one of the most watched items all year on RTE and Bird looks unclean, unkempt and dressed totally inappropriately. How disrespectful!!

Not to mention the totally unprofessional package. The text would have been better written and punctuated by a 12 year old! How was the church in a suburb in one sentence and in the city centre in the next? The delivery was awful too.

Please RTE bring this man home...and retire him!!

I agree with all you said above.

to add insult to injury his Live report on the RTE news said Barack was about to give the Eulogy(Obama already had)

Ted,s coffin would then leave the church(it was already in the funeral motarcade.
All in all a very poor show by the RTE newsroom for a man who had been there so often for Ireland.

I think he was home for the Jackson death...not 100% certain.

He's by far the worst US correspondent RTE has had in years...he still manages to make most of the stories about himself (I did this...they told me...) - all stuff Journalism 101 tells you not to do!

firstly ... I cant see him being a disgrace for not dressing like he was at a funeral - as he was NOT actually at a funeral - he was reporting from somewhere nearby, in fairness.

also.... Fitz !!! RTE most likely dont care if you pay the licence fee or not - it is the Government that want the licence fee money - doesnt matter if you watch RTE or not ...its a TV Licence(tax) for actually possessing a TV - (or by having the means to receive a TV Signal) its amazing how many people mix up TV Licence and a TV Station !!!.

on a mobile so cant watch the clip.i heard a number of complaints went into rte about the six one news bulletin.statement released said he had been soaked in the rain and had to do a quick change to his daily clothes,he was appropriately dressed for the nine o clock bulletin.

Charlie's appointment as a foreign correspondant has always struck me as a strange choice. He's general demenour and style are ramshackle, he has the quality of a reporter who is very much suited to covering 'local issues'. As the American correspondant he's seems completely out of place, particularly given the slick nature of American media.

RTÉ will be able to seek annual increases up to the level of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). RTÉ made its first application for an increase linked to CPI in November 2003
u are wrong of course rte care about the licence fee its rte that benefits from it and in my opinion squanders it like last year when they paid 1800euros for joe duffy to travel for 1 night to travel from vienna to paris on some fancy train and only rte benefits from it, tv3 or 3e do not get any money from the licence ,but you are right you dont need a tv to have a licence just any equipment that can receive a signal which could technally include a pc

Not trying to sidetrack thread or anything but personally speaking, its been a long time indeed since I've seen majority people or so dress appropriately at a funeral.
Its a solemn affair. A burial. Not a night out in a bloody pub or a "bit'o craic".

    There. Rant over.
    Thanks for your time.

RTE get the vast majority of the TV license money, this is very much a fact

Yes you pay it regardless of if you watch RTE but it still very much benefits them and as such they want it paid once you have a Tv/VCR etc

The licence fee supports not just RTE but TV3 and TG4 to smaller extents as well as independent production companies here. The RTE proportion covers TV and Radio, two orchestras, several choirs - it's not all about large salaries to the few.

I have many issues with the TV licence (why does a 1000 room hotel only need one TV licence when they pay a fee for every set to SKY?) but my reason for this thread is the worst US correspondent RTE have had in my lifetime.
