Does anyone take supplements after training - to aid recovery?

All the MA magazines are full of advertisements for them, and I was wondering if anyone has taken it and if it helped their recovery after hard sparring sessions etc... (black eyes excluded ;))

Depends on how hard / how often you train / how good your diet is whether or not you should bother.

Most people, if they followed a healthy and well balanced diet would have little use for suppliments.

Unfortunetely due to busy work, and or school/study schedules don't meet those requirements.

In my case the only suppliments I use are a good multi-vit (for me its centrum) and an Omega III tab for my joints.

Other than that I try to take in a (dailY) well banced diet of proteins, carbs & fats.. and since I have to let loose occassionally a liberal dosage of Vitamin A(lcohol) on the weekends :P - good for the sanity!.

    (also great for hangovers)

I need as much help as I can get, so I take these every day.
I use the Solgar brand as imo its the best quality out there. Omnium the best multivitamin/multi mineral available in tablet form, and Vitamin C 1000mg

We've recently got some Preload, Reload and Inflamin in from the US, our Team Balance friends over there were raving about them.
Rays been taking them for a few weeks now, he trains way harder than me, he thinks they're the mutts nuts.

I've just taken the Preload so far, you take it half an hour before you train... great stuff :D

I'm reading a book at the moment by Patrick Holford entitled the Optimum Nutrition Bible.

It's turning all my initial thoughts and practices around supplements on it's head.

I'd recommend a read of it of it if you're big into your sport. I got it in Chapters for a tenner. Bargain.

Any form of protein after training is beneficial to recovery. Getting a protein down the neck after a tough session is vital for the rapid replenishment of muscle glycogen after exercise and will aid in the rebuilding and repair of muscles broken down or damaged during you training.

Also increasing Potassium levels post training is advisable for optimum recovery. This can be simply done by eating a banana!!

If its for knocks and bruises taking Zinc (or a ZMA tablet) before you go to bed can work wonders as it increases quality of "healing sleep".

Or for bruising Arnica (creams, or tablets) is a natural remedy, you can pick from any health shop. The creams along with Hot / Cold packs for a Black eye work like a charm (as I discovered on the run up to wedding :P)

If your looking for a good all rounder try out a product called Recovermax (protein, glutamine and potassium)! Its the spiders ankles for re hydration and recovery.
