    Hi All,

I need to replace my current car urgently.

I have a budget of 5k, and am pretty inexperienced when it comes to cars, so I'd appreciate any advice.

Is it better to buy from a dealership, or a mechanic that sells cars?
I understand mechanics are much better value, but do you have any recourse if things go wrong?

I live on the northside - clarehall area.. Does anyone know of any reputable/ reliable dealers in that area?

I'm thinking of a ford focus or Mondeo, or maybe some kind of Toyota? Will go for a 1.8 engine probably...

If you had 5k to spend what car would you buy now, in terms of safety, reliability, looks etc.

thanks all, looking forward to hearing any advice or comments?

Avensis slightly out of favour with motor dealers because of earlier oversupply bit of value in these particularly in a high miles examples so bargain hard.Used car Stock is scarce at the moment but not mondeos and avensis so plenty to haggle over

avoid fords, had mondeo 01 before, and i wouldn't recommend.

    Best cars are toyotas, hondas.
i had good few cars in my life, and the best i had, was definitelly honda and toyota, but notice that everything can break down, it all depends on how it was used before, check the history before u buy it is very important.

AVOID fords, Alfas, citroens, rovers and mg's.

HAHA thats quite the generalisation there, but to be fair not far off imo.

That said from my experience Ford are quite a reliable car. And other than the list of honda and toyota there I'd add on nissan (as much as I'm not a fan) and mazda. Two more jap cars to the mix.
Dont be fooled by VW. They are NOT as reliable as you would think.

Ford is not that reliable, and the market value is going down super fast.... my 01 mondeo, which i paid for 6k after a year was worth just 2.5k. If you want to loose money on the car, pick ford.

i agree about the VW. They're sh*t. Driving Golf at the moment - spent like 1.5k in just 3 months.

OP, I'd be looking at something like the Honda Accord, very little goes wrong with them and are a solid enough car.

    For example:

exactly, thats what i'd think about, some nice accord.
No-problem car. Had older one before, '97. After nearly 2 years of driving it the only thing i had to do is to change brake pads (€35), which is normal.
