    Hi there,

I’ve wanted to get braces for a long time but finding it hard trying to get a recommendation of a good orthodontist, any recommendations greatly appreciated.

I don’t think I will need a lot of work (I hope!!), but I just want a straighter smile, as my front tooth is kinda crooked.

I was recommended Xxxxxxx Ortho in Blackrock village but I cant seem to find any reviews and such on him, has anyone been to him, if you don’t want to post up here just pm me, any info good or bad would be great,

    Thanks :)

    Hi,
The guy you mention is not an orthodontist, he's a general dentist. You can find a list of fully qualified specialist orthodontists in your area on the Orthodontic Society of Ireland's website www.orthodontics.ie
    Hope this helps

It is quite confusing - I remember seeing another thread recently about the various dental specialties and qualifications etc. - it's a bit of a minefield!
Basically any dentist is entitled to carry out orthodontic treatment if they feel competent to do so. Generally speaking, basic dental training provides very little experience of orthodontics. Some dentists attend a couple of weekend training courses and then start providing orthodontic treatment for their patients, others may do slightly more extensive courses such as the Dip Clin Dent at the Dublin Dental Hospital before starting treatment. Some start providing orthodontic treatment as soon as they leave dental school without any further training, and sort of learn on the job. None of these are orthodontists, they are general dentists who do some orthodontics.

An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an extensive programme of postgraduate training in orthodontics, of at least 3 years (full-time) duration, and passed the relevent exams. This means that if you attend a registered specialist orthodontist (the Register of Dental Specialists is administered by the Dental Council) you can be certain that they have had the appropriate training to allow them to properly diagnose and manage all types of orthodontic problems using a wide variety of types of braces.
Orthodontists usually limit their practice to orthodontics, so if someone offers orthodontic treatment in addition to other types of treatment, they are probably not an orthodontist. However, just to confuse things further there are a few general dentists who only do orthodontics, but are not trained / registered orthodontists. So you would still need to check if they are on the Register of Dental Specialists (Division of Orthodontics).
The Orthodontic Society of Ireland only admits members who are registered Specialists, so any name you get from their website is a Specialist. However, not every orthodontist in the country is an OSI member (although most are), so if someone does not appear on the website it doesn't mean they're not a specialist, so again you could check with the dental council.

Sorry about the long-winded reply - hope you're not even more confused now!

Thanks so much for the reply, it has definately made things a lot clear as to all the different senario's that can be classed as "orthodontists"

    Back to searching!

I am also looking for a good Orthodontist in Dublin. I came across Dublin Orthodontics, they look good, but hoping to see if anybody has had any dealings with them?

Guys and girls the forum rules have changed since this thread was started and now no names are allowed on the forum. I will close this old thread and leave it as is, however any new questions should be put in a new thread and worded like "can anyone reccomend a orthodontist in X"
