Just finished watching it for the 2nd time, and I have to say Bravo! I cant believe this movie has not been discussed on here. It wasnt a hit at the box office, and as for a rental it didnt do too well either, but this is because the Matrix stole the limelight.....

    "Autumn of 1999"
Average Joe walks into Xtravision/Blockbuster etc"
Joe: Hey dude, whats this 13th floor like?
Guy behind counter: Its like the matrix but no action.
Joe: Sod that! Ill take the matrix instead <again>

For those of you who have not seen it, it is the matrix with no action, but remove action from the Matrix and what do you have? A load of guys talking gobbledygook but using words from history and other cultures to make it sound intellectual: Oracle, Nebuchadnezzar, Trinity, Morpheus, Zion etc.. Take out the action and there is not alot to keep you interested. The 13th floor, however, is basically a murder mystery.

However, it spans 3 different worlds. In the matrix, you had the the real world and the machine world. in the 13th floor, you have a 3rd world, and the possibility for several others.

When talking about the 13th floor to other people, or when blogging about it online I have seen numerous people describe the 13th floor as "a copy of the Matrix", that it was a "tired idea", "we have seen this before" etc. To those people and to anyone still reading this I would like to point out, that the 13th floor was released in May of 1999 and the Matrix was released in August. Kind of difficult to copy a movie before you see it.

I wont go into the plot much more for fear of spoiling something for someone, however I will say this, and please do not highlight this if you have not seen the 13th floor because it may spoil something for you.
The 13th floor was not a copy of the matrix, and the Matrix was not a copy of the 13th floor, but, in my opinion, the bit in the 3rd Matrix movie when Smith gets uploaded into Bane HAS to be a rip off of the 13th. In the 13th floor, how an individual from a virtual world could have their consciousness uploaded into their user's brain was never explained, but then, neither was it explained in the matrix either.

Wow, didnt mean to write a novel about the movie, but I seem to have started one. Seriously, if you want a thought provoking movie to watch, rent it out.
