Have I Bricked My Phone?

    Hi All,

Apologies for bothering you. After reading this site (and others) I decided that I would buy a 16g 3gs and jailbreak/unlock it to use on meteor.

After attempting Purplera1n a couple of times I discovered that Geo stated that it would not work for firmware 3.1. So I carefully read over what I needed to do using redsn0w and ultrasn0w. The jailbreaking went fine.

I then went to follow the instructions for ultrasn0w. A couple of error messages popped up (apologies, I can't remember what they said) at the start when Cydia was updating itself. The only thing to do was click 'ok' at any rate, there was no 'cancel' function. The rest of the process seemed to go ok, however at the end, it differentiated from the iclarified walk through, in that the screen said 'reboot' instead of 'return to cydia'. Again, there was no other option to click, so I went ahead with it.

It went to the white apple logo from there, and now that is all I am able to get. I have tried holding home and power on/off, and that appears to do some sort of a reset, however, when I attempt to turn it on, again, all I see is the Apple logo*edit*for a few seconds, then it turns itself off*end edit*. iTunes does not recognise it at all.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. Failing that, suggestions on somewhere in Dublin that may be unable to do my shambles are also welcomed.

(Just to note, I had changed the firmware to 3.0 for the jailbreak, and used the appropriate ISPW file. And to repeat, I followed the instructions to the letter, apart from where i outlined above.)

    Thanks in advance guys...*crosses fingers*

First, let me say that there is always a fix. Your iPhone cannot be permanently bricked, despite what you might have heard online. :) So good news there.

Do you get a response when you plug it into itunes? If so, try restoring it that way.

You're going to have to do another restore I'm afraid. Follow this tutorial to put your phone back into DFU in iTunes:

    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

Sometimes the key to problems like this can be tied to whether you restored from a backup rather than a fresh install with factory settings. Can you remember which one you went for?

Have you ever done a backup before on iTunes?

Try this to do a DFU restore ... http://www.ismashphone.com/2008/08/recovery-dfu.html

EDIT: Haha, Spoon just beat me to it!!

Firstly, thanks all for the responses so early on a Sunday!

    spoongibbon -

"You're going to have to do another restore I'm afraid"...no need to be afraid...I'm not too bothered, if that's the worst that I have to do (i.e. redo everything!)

"Can you remember which one you went for?" - Having read a few things on the Dev team blog, I went for the "set up as new phone" selection (instead of "restore from previous iphone") when jailbreaking, is this what your referring to?

banquo - There is currently no response when I plug it into Itunes, however, after reading your posts, I'm going to try a DFU while it's connected.

Unfortunately, I'm currently in work, so it'll be a few hours before I can try...I'm heading to France tomorrow afternoon for a week, hopefully I can get it sorted by then! Any other suggestions are more than welcome!

mick - thanks also for your help and link - three minutes of a difference, very close!

thanks again everyone, I'll post an update on how I get on once I get home from work and cracking on it again !

Thanks guys, the advice worked a treat!!

So my last question is, should I try the jailbreak/unlock again?! Or should I leave well enough alone, and get someone in town to do it for me?

    Suggestions welcome, and thanks again!

Jailbreak, yes. Unlock, best not chance it if you're going off on holiday :D Maybe when you get back and there's no chance of getting lost/robbed and really needing a working phone!

Jailbreaking unlocks the software so you get all the extra apps/themes/etc. Unlocking unlocks it to any network.

ok, I've managed to jailbreak and unlock the iphone! (when i started cydia i allowed it to do all updates, instead of just essential) Thanks again all!

Unfortunately a new problem has reared its head, one that I haven't come across on the forum before when I look back through posts. I can't add my music from itunes onto the iphone? is there a way around this? it seems a bit silly to have all that free space sitting on the phone!

thanks again for all the help previous to this guys!
