Dunno if anyone is interested but the 500GB Time Capsule in PC World has dropped to €179. Same price as the refurbished 500GB on the Apple store.

Picked one up today and swapped the Hard Drive for a 1.5TB when i got home. Really impressive piece of kit. I set it up running an N network for my Mac and Apple TV. Left the Eircom Router running G for my other halfs laptop and the Windows machine.

1TB version is only 269 on the apple site. Wasn't this around 500 euro not so long ago?

The first Time Capsules shipped in early '08 are dying like flies at the minute.
Cheapy capicitators or some such. Look up in Apple discussions. Depressing.
Odd that they haven't pulled the plug on the thread, they are a good news outfit.
Apparently you should backup the backup!

Ya very easy. Use a hair dryer to remove the rubber base and just a few screws after that. HD comes away easy enough.

    Have a look here!

    I don;t even have a timemachine yet but I'm upto just about 4TB :D

I might try get my hands on a 2TB time machine while in the states soon, save about 150e by buying it in the states :)

How noisy are these things sitting on a desk in front of you? I was thinking of getting one but the potential of noise and the fact that the hard disk isn't easily swappable has put me off so far.
I currently have an external USB drive plugged in to my airport extreme and wonder is that a better solution.

I would consider that a better solution since if the router dies, you still have your hard drive around and vice versa. The all-in-one nature of the Time Machine is nice and all, but if anything fails, you lose access to everything while sending it off to be replaced...

Well part of it is made up of backups from my main machine and macbook (I've had too many hd's fail to not make backups), my photo collection which is mostly in RAW format which is just about 1TB then general videos I've ripped from my own dvd's etc :)

Can you tell me what type of power cord does the airport extreme take?

It has its' own small power brick - not just a cord:

Interesting, looks like a normal "stereo cable" should allow this to work in Europe if bought in the states...whats the voltages like for the brick...whats the range?

I bought my time capsule in the States. It works fine here with a travel adaptor.

It is the standard "figure 8" cable (used for stereos and a bazillion other things) so you can swap it for a US or EU/UK one as needed. I'm pretty sure the range is 110-240V but I'm not home right now to check. I can post back later in the afternoon. I think most Apple devices these days have worldwide power adapters.

Hmm might get my hands on one of these in the states, I have a choice of two apple stores in two different citys :)

Found this on the Apple support pages, indicates it has an auto-switching adapter, just like iPods do so I'm almost certain now you can pick it up in the US or anywhere really:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1981
    AirPort Base Station
AirPort Base Station (Graphite) Preset - purchase a power adapter from a local Apple-Authorized Service Provider if needed
AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) Preset - purchase a power adapter from a local Apple-Authorized Service Provider if needed
    AirPort Extreme Base Station Auto-Switching

I also have a USB HD plugged into the back of the Time Capsule. This allows me to archive the backup. Its a 750GB Dual Bay Raid Drive, so it backs up the backups backup ;)

Im very paranoid about losing me music collection (again :o).
