...you'd get further on a dodgy kit and a few sweet mics or dodgy mics and a sweet kit? I'm talking drums here.

i'd go with the sweet kit and dodgy mics

    reason?

a sweet kit with a good drummer will provide a better performance that can easily be used for drum replacement.

a dodgy kit will give a less than desirable performance and the sweet mics will only amplify the dodgy sound.

i'd always take a top range instrument over top range mics because if the performance isnt up to par then nothing else really matters does it?

+1 to what DT said. A dodgy kit will always sound crap no matter how good the mics. However "dodgy kit" IMO is a bit of a myth (unless it's really falling apart). It's all about how well the kit is tuned & how good the drummer is

You should get a decent sound from just about any kit by putting on a new set of skins, tuning it properly & then playing it properly.

I always think a well recorded/mixed 'bad' sound is much more interesting than a badly done 'good' sound.

Artists like Esser and Hard-Fi's first album don't have 'good' sounds in a hi-fi way but are all the more interesting for that.

maybe with an amp with a blown cone or a cheap guitar but a cheap out of tune kit with old skins sounds like muck no matter what you do with it.

its much easier to get a trashy lo-fi sound from a good kit than it is to get a good sound from a trashy kit!

Is this from a production perspective as opposed to an enginnering perspective?
