Saw a 2002 VW polo, 72k on it, in a garage today with interior looking good. I didn't have time to hang around and ask even what litre engine it is, but I'm thinking to head back again Monday to see what they are asking for.

Had a look there on carzone and autotrader and for that kinda mileage it's looking at between 4k and 5k.. So, from what I can tell ye, what do ye think is the cheapest I'll be able to bargain them down for? It's a cool colour and I have decided to just go down the reliable route.

Cheers folks, any tips appreciated. Haven't bought from a dealer before.

Offer €0.83c and some pubes - see what they say.

Is it *really* a nice colour?

€4k to €5k for a 7 year old Polo is crazy money.

Listen there are lovely mercs out there a lot cheaper than that polo. Have another look on cbg.ie here is a link to one I found - not sure if you prefer the saloon or hatchback model.

If I was going down the reliable route I don't think I'd look at a Polo tbh. One of the most over rated cars on the road. I'm no expert though, but just know a few people that had them. They get very rattly over the years and little things seem to plague them.
I reckon the Clio (I know it's a Renault, but has a very sound reliability record), Yaris, Fiesta would serve you better. And that's not to mention the Polo miserably spec.

If you have nothing useful to post then don't post at all

Its hard to offer useful advice about a seven year old Polo. If you read the other replies, they struggled too. Someone even suggested the OP buy a Merc - thats even LESS helpful than what I said.

OK, here goes: OP - get someone who actually knows about cars to help you pick something, I suspect you don't know the difference between petrol and diesel. Stay away from web forums where every 12 year old with a modem is likely to offer 'advice', get someone to actually look at the car for you. If you really want an old Polo then it doesn't matter which one you pick or what you pay - they are all underpowered kack.

    That better?

    Dear pog it,

Buy something like this for less than a grand and save yourself 4-6k in the process. You will STILL have a VW Polo and some of your dignity. (And all of your pubes)

7yr old vs. 10yr old - no difference IMHO. You will buy a lot of AA cover for the 5k change in your account and the newer one is as likely to break down.

    Don't mention it.

Sorry I am just getting a chance to read the replies now.. It's my first couple of days going around garages looking for a car and I've only had a polo before this, so guess it was going to be one of my first targets. Plus I've just decided to stay boring and not spend more than 3k.

Really appreciate the advice about the polo being over-rated, so thank you all, I've definitely put it out of mind now.. and I've been told by friends and couple of people who know more than me that the Yaris would be a great car if you're looking for economically friendly cars so that's what I'm looking into getting now, so fingers crossed.

€3k will get you a decent Ford Fiesta like this:

Thanks but honestly I'm one of those ford fiesta don't -likers!! Same with opel corsas.. I know the polo is bland enough in its older style as well, but it was my first car so I became attached to it :P

Plus 1 on the Ford. They are reliable, cheap to run, cheap to repair and fine to drive. For this budget you should forget about badge preference or cute styling and get a good solid car...

Jesus, don't buy a Ford. They devalue like there's no tomorrow. Go down the Toyota route and get a Yaris. Toyota are reliable.

When you buy second hand, you benefit from the devaluation...

    Not since the 1990's

Since when is the measure of a good car defined by it's second hand value? Going by that logic VWs are the best cars in the world but those of us who are informed know different.

Both of these cars are definitely worth considering I reckon, yeah. I'm just going for cheap to run, tax and insure, I do around 15k a year.

What do ye think of Opel/Vauxhall Astras? There was a 2003 model in the garage going for around 3k. The dealer was recommending it to be over the Yaris and the Polo... He also recommended the Nissan Almera but it's too long.

He would say that. If it's a Vauxhall, it's an import. Also those 3-cyl 1 litre engines in Corsa B&C's (93-05) are TERRIBLE. I've had one and it cost me a fortune.

Keep away from a 1l corsa. If I were you I'd go up a class and get something that isn't underpowered. You should look at a Honda civic/Toyota Corolla. There isn't much difference in size but unless you pootle around town all day you'll appreciate a bit of extra power when overtaking/motorway/N-road driving.
