Problem with my PC - monitor entering power save mode

    Hello,

Having a problem with my PC lately, whenever I'm gaming (any game) I can play for around 15-20 minutes and then the system locks up and the screen goes into power save mode. This doesn't happen when I'm not gaming.

I've done some troubleshooting to no avail, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

I've backdated drivers on my graphics card (GTX 285) and motherboard, I've updated them again. I've checked all the connections on the back of the base unit, everything is fine. The monitor is only 6 months old (it's a Dell 22") so that shouldn't be the problem. I've opened the casing to see that everything is secure, that there's no build up of dust or anything etc. GPU doesn't seem to be physically broken or damaged, it's only about 2 months old anyway. I've switch the power save options off, so the monitor shouldn't be doing this...have checked a good few things (googled the problem), all I can think of so I hope people don't think I'm just being lazy and asking straight up!

    Any ideas?

Anyone who plays Arma 2 knows the infamous hasn't been on in a few days, I'm missing it big time so any help here would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like overheating of some sort tbh.
What's the airflow like in your case?
Is the cooling fan on the GPU definitely running?

You could also try running a test on the GPU memory but this is unlikely to be the problem. Use this if you want to try it.

    Thanks Redisle,

It could well be overheating, the card is new so yeah the fan is working. I can use Rivatuner to turn it up and down (no,I don't overclock). I had a look at the card there and it does look a little marked, like maybe heat is affecting it? Is there any way to spot this? I'm starting to wonder did it get damaged by static charge either when I put it in,or would that stop it working completely? Thanks for the reply anyway.

Ok so I went to give the base unit a clean with some compressed air....switched it on and got the message 'operating system missing'.....disaster. Spent a few days investigating it to no avail so I bought a new hard drive earlier, stuck it in and reinstalled windows...everything seems to be okay now.
