I have to get a 50th birthday present to get for my father and was thinking of getting him something golf related. He has a new driver and new clubs so they arent possibilites. Anyone got any suggestions?

My big suggestion is to take him to a golf course he hasn't played before. Far better than a gadget, and he gets to play with his son. I've been doing the same with my dad for the last few years and it's a real pleasure.

There is a great new book out called, "Hooked - An amateurs guide to the golf courses of Ireland";)

But if your not into golf yourself, get him something that he hasn't got or that he needs such as a trolly, either electrical or manual, a new bag for his new clubs or new golf clothes. I suppose to get him something practical, so that he can use it again and again to get the full value of it.

What would be a good course to get him a round at that wouldn't cost a fortune for three of us. We are based in Dundalk and obviously the closer the better.

The two that spring to mind would be Concra Wood (50 quid) and Greenore (slightly cheaper). Greenore is very flat with nice views, while Concra Wood is stunning but has a few gentle climbs

Seeing as you are based in Dundalk you could take him to Royal County Down. Not far from you and one of the best golf courses on the planet. Pricey enough as you can guess but they reduce their green fees for the winter (Oct - Mar) so you should be able to play there for 70-80 sterling as soon as October rolls around. Its double that to play there from April to September.
In you are not a golfer yourself then you could get him a piece of golf memorabillia. I bought a ryder cup putter last year that was made from wood from trees at Valhalla golf course in America where they played the Ryder Cup last year. In order to accomodate all the spectators they had to cut down some of the trees around the course and they made wooden putters out of the trees they removed. They only made a limited number of them so it would be something different if you decided on that as a present.
