Sherlock Holmes

Looks like a good action movie, but will be alot more style than substance. The murder/mystery element of a Holmes story will not be in this film.

Robert Downey jnr as Holmes??? Come on, he does not fit in with the part or the character. Same for Jude Law as Watson. It'll be Tom Hanks and The Da Vinci Code all over again...

Will not be a traditional Holmes flick. Looks like a good film, but the title is just there to make extra cash.

That is possibly the worst casting for Holmes! In no way believable. I agree it does look like an entertaining film, but it doesn't fit in as part of the Sherlock Holmes franchise. I'm a bit disappointed by it.

Cant stand Guy Ritchie or Jude Law for that matter but RDJ and Rachel McAdams might make it worth watching, looks fun

Worse than Sacha Baron Cohen as Holmes, even in a comedy? :p

Got a very Shanghai Knights/League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vibe off this one, not terribly interested.

My opinion, Jude Law in any film is bad casting.

    +1

Was looking forward to this, until I saw the trailer.. Here's hoping it's just being severely mis-marketed.

I don't know about that. I quite enjoyed Clive Owen making him cry in Closer.:D

Went to see this tonight. Thought it was really good.

Plenty of funny little quips and action.

    Jude Law was excellent imo.

I'm a sucker for a good soundtrack, and this one sounds like an absolute scorcher. It's mostly by Hans Zimmer, though it also features a guy named Diego Stocco and his Experibass. This is a mutant instrument with four necks that gets tortured and abused, all for our listening pleasure:

Was looking so forward to this one but the trailer was pretty dire.

I mean its not Holmes at all...very OTT, explosions, acting silly.

I was hoping for a darker more back to basics approach a la Casino Royale or Batman Begins but it sees to have gone in the opposite direction.

    ...oh and Jeremy Brett ftw.;)

Kinda reminds me of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" I actually liked that movie, although most I know didn't.

Still, gonna try and see this one.

To be honest any opportunities I'm presented with to see Sherlock Holmes hit someone with a stick... I'm there.

trailer looks decent enough. I might catch it when it's out on DVD. I don't like the main actors either but they don't look too disagreeable in the film.

It's directed by Guy Ritchie so it's obviously going to be complete garbage. Guaranteed. That clown is a chancer of the highest calibre. How studios still give him big budgets is beyond me.

heard bad things aout this, in one scene you can see the london eye in the background, and holmes has a rolling stones poster on the wall in another scene

well yeah its obviously going to be crap if you decide its crap before watching it

Yes considering it's Guy Ritchie it's guaranteed to be crap. So yes I am deciding it's crap before I've seen it. Safest prediction I'll ever make. I will eat these words if I am wrong so remember this post. However I won't be wrong. GUARANTEED to be a bag of nails.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭builttospill

Sorry. I should probably add that I definitely won't be watching it so I'll actually be deciding it's crap without ever seeing it. Would you go back to a restaurant after they've given you food poisoning?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,629 ✭✭✭magma69

The trailer doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. Sherlock Holmes should not be a balls out action flick. All those explosions/action seem to ruin the essence of what the movie should be. A great mystery story. I'll give it a watch when it comes out but I am well prepared for this to be a dreadful movie. I'm glad Ritchie has moved away from the London gangster genre though. He won't ever reach the heights of Lock, Stock or Snatch so he should venture into other genres.

Not liking all the hatred for Jude Law. He is a decent actor with some great movies on his c.v. He plays the role perfectly in I Heart Huckabees. eXistenZ, Road to Perdition are tasty movies.

I'll agree RDJ is a complete miscast. I really like him as an actor but he just isn't right for this role. Can't help but think that he was chosen to ensure there was plenty of American interest.

    terrible analogy

a better one would be whether i would give the restaurant another go if id been there before and a dish hadnt been to my taste, the answer would be yes id probably go and just try another dish this time

Saw this film lately at a preview. Must say i really enjoyed it.

To those that are saying it looks awful so wont be going to see or because its guy ritchie you wont be seeing it, i think you should open ur minds abit.

Trailer makes it look all action but it isnt really. Downey Jnr is very good, as is Jude Law (and im one who hates him in most things).

Most of the people there seemed to enjoy it as well.

LOL. No. I have seen a few of his films. They were visual and aural diarrhea. Therefore they were poisonous and I won't be going back. End of. How is that a "terrible analogy?" Do you know how poisioned I was after this restaurant? Were you a fly on the proverbial wall. LOL again.

What is it you find hard to believe? That this film won't be crap or the fact that I am condeming it without having seen it? It's Guy Ritchie for God's sake. Guy Ritchie! The clown is quite possibly one of the worst filmmakers ever. This film will be rubbish. GUARANTEED. Now... if you don't believe that then we'll just have to agree to disagree. I know I'll be right though and if you're a Guy ritchie fan I'm sure you'll think you're right if you think it's good. Everyone's happy!

what a load of rubbish talk, did they actually affect your health? no they didnt, hence why likening it to food poisoning was retarded, they just didnt appeal to your tastes, which are subjective

    @ Builttospill

I don't care how many of his films you've seen it's an incredible assertion to make about a film that you haven't seen to say it's crap. You simply don't know. You are merely guessing based on your previous experiences. And tbh your analogy was pants. Comparing a director to a restaurant is just plain stupid. Not least because the film is made up of more parts than just the director which in my view will make this a must see film. Unlike his previous outings, he did not write this one and he seems to have stuck firmly to the directors chair. I for one think he has a decent visual style, albeit he's flogged it constantly over the past years. In any case this can't contain the usual "geezers" etc that clog up his other films and with the cast on show I think it must be given a chance at the very least.

But I guess you will never know.

Anyone seen this yet? Looks like a major success already - made $25m on Christmas Day in the U.S and is expected to hit close to $70m this weekend - massive numbers and the budget was only $80m. I'm sure it'll gross a lot more internationally as well as it's a pretty international character. Really happy for Ritchie as well and good to see Downey Jnr now has two back-to-back franchises :D

However - haven't seen it yet, has anyone hear? Got pretty good reviews too

It's getting a lot of very average reviews and as mcuh as I like the character and some of the talent involved I'm not exactly excited for it.

I went to see the movie today. I enjoyed it, but then I always was a Sherlock Holmes fan. The film had a good few action scenes in it and the story was pretty much standard. I'd compare it to League of Extraordinary Gentleman without as many gadgets.

I'm guessing its Sherlock Holmes for people who don't know or care about Sherlock Holmes.

    Just saw it.

Quite enjoyable the characters were fun and played off each other quite well. Plot wise it's very James bond at parts and nothing to marvel at. But it's got enough meat to keep you seated for it's length without issue. Really what sells it is Downey and Jude law as holmes and Watson they play off each other really well. Action wise the set pieces don't do much despite impressive fight cheoreography. The film never takes advantage of it's locations much except for one sequence shown in the trailer. And on guy richies direction his style works at some points quite well but a flurry of flashbacks at the end was a bit much I rather have seen explanation in practice then quick montages

overall a solid 8 from me

Very good way of describing it.

It's an enjoyable romp with Sherlock Holmes as a background.

Mods - merge the two SH threads!

Just came back from it - good, but not great. RDJ and Law had great chemistry, the sets and the costumes were also fantastic and some interestingly shot scenes. However the pacing was completely off, certain scenes were unnecessary (the bare-chested pub fight) and the film felt very, very long. I wasn't sure if the action and brawling, "badass" Sherlock Holmes would work and I don't feel it did. The best parts in the movie were his deduction skills and problem solving - Sherlock Holmes should always be either a detective or thriller movie, not a full-on action movie. As I said though, the basics are sound so a lot of ground to improve on with the sequel (which will definitely happen after it's box office performance this weekend)

Went to see it today, both myself and my 12 yr old son.We both enjoyed film big time and can't wait for the next one .Left wide open for a sequel featuring Prof.Moriarty.
My son is a big sherlock holmes fan as am i,he has 2 versions of "the hound of the baskervilles" and is looking to order another one.
Myself I think i have seen nearly everything made about him.

Just curious,is it just me or did they make a mistake with the bottle of wine...foil cap?Did they cover the top of wine bottles like that, back then?.

It's entertaining yet forgettable. That pretty much sums it up for me.

What's with Ritchie and bare knuckle boxing though? Why was a 19th century London private detective involved in bare knuckle boxing?
Some of the scenes pretty much mirrored those in snatch.

In the original stories Holmes was actually a very accomplished boxer and regularly took in part bare knuckle boxing! So in this case at least its not just Guy Ritchies fetish.

Actually Conan Doyles Holmes was a very complex individual and this by far the best attempt yet to mirror that. Some people here are saying they liked earlier versions of Holmes but the fact is that those versions with their deerstalker and cape etc. are just fantasy.

I think Ritchie was basically introducing the characters with this movie and theres certainly going to be a sequal. For example it would have been totally pointless to involve Moriarty, Mycroft or Mary (who dies shortly after her marriage to watson) unless they play an important part in a sequel. Whilst this movie was a bit disappointing with the storyline and depended on special effects, i reckon in the next one we'l see more of a battle of wits between Moriarty and Holmes! Mouthwatering stuff
