My Dell Pc has started making a ringing noise on start up ie before the operating system loads. Sound stops after a few seconds. Anyone come across this? Could it be a fan /dust issue ?

No not a beep, continous ringing tinkling sound.

Have you tried answering it? :P

It might be your fan or HD

If you are using a CRT monitor and you're getting a high pitched whine or a sort of chirping it could be the tube failing in your screen (this happend to me) . try starting the machine with the monitor off.

more info would help, is the sound coming from the speakers or from the machine itself?

Sound is coming from the machine (not speakers). Dont think its a fan as the sound stops when Windows starts to load.

I'd advise you to open your case and reboot a few times, stick yer ear in and try to find out exactly what part of the board its coming from.
post back what you find out, you could try disconnecting your case fans and swapping out hardware but if I were you i'd wait to see what fails and sort it out then. may never happen.

check the pc beeper. should be a black cilindrical thingy hanging off the board somewhere.
