    hey guys
just bought a 5m usb cable on ebay and it does work.
i plugged in a usb stick and the small red light on the stick, was very faint and didnt work again.

    I have a macbook.
i was thinkin that the macbook's usb o/p's dont have enough power to send the signal down 5metres of cables.

i tried using the cable on my windows psrtition in the off chance that was at fault, but still nothing

Im thinking of a buying a powered usb hub anyway, would the sort the issue?
o one more thing i bought it on ebay,if that makes any difference for 3.15e

    thanks
    ed

I think 5m is right on the limit of how far a device can be on an un-powered USB cable and in most cases, only low powered devices (like a mouse) would work. If you connected a powered USB hub to the 5m cable, then the device that is not working, that should work (a self powered USB device, e.g a USB TV tuner with a separate mains adapter should also work).

Most memory sticks don't require too much power though and should work on an un-powered cable so that's a bit odd.

Some hardware can be tricky if used with the longer "boosted" usb leads. Apparently the 3 modem won't work with one.

The 3 modem though (like any 3G modem) needs full USB power, but a memory stick really shouldn't. Still, powered USB hub on the 5m extension should work just fine.

Any reason why you want to connect a memory stick 5m away from your Mac though, OP? :p
