I have friends coming over from America in the next few days and they will be spending a day in Dublin with me. Can anyone suggest a few decent tourist type things to do with them before we go out for food/drink in the evening?

Guinness Factory is the most obvious one.

    Jameson distillery along similar lines.

Trinity College is usually worth a look, with the old library etc.

The Viking Splash Tours if they're into that sort of thing. It's also a handy way to briefly see a large number of points of interest.

It really depends on what they enjoy. Are they young, old, adventurous?

    A few things that popped into my mind;
    - Dublin Castle
    - Trinity College (Book of Kells)
    - Viking Splash Tour
    - Guinness Storehouse
    - Go for a pint in "The Templebar" or "Gogartys" and listen to some trad?

I dunno really, Im not a tourist.

Edit: Sorry abelard, hope you dont think I stole your ideas. I must have being typing my reply while you posted yours.

A trip out to Howth perhaps?

I would recoment a place called CHURCH it at teh junction of Mary St and Jervis st, you cant miss it. Its a really good spot with trad music on 7 nights from about 5pm and the club is open weekends. Its also worth mentioningthat teh food is really really good and very resonable.

id also suggest you head out of towna bit, do Ireland Eye from howth and stuff its a great laugh.

    :D

Christ church cathederal has great architecture if they are into that type of thing. There is also a place beside it....I think it's called "duvlina" or something. It is a bit of fun.It is this play village type thing with live actors and they potray what a viking village may have looked like. That being said,it may be included in the viking splash tour.I'm not sure.

Bring them to Burdocks for lunch-then hit Christchurch, Brazen Head, St Michens, the Spire, Moore St, Smithfield.

If the courts are in session, bring them into the four courts to observe the proceedings. (I brought a crowd of Yanks there about 10 years ago and they still talk about how one of the prisoners called the judge a fvcin cvnt)

Tourist sh1te is the same the world over.

Instead, bring them to places where they can inhale the essence of the real city

Jameson and Guinnes tours aren't very good.

Guinness tour is just a walk around some silly building by yrself and then you get a crappy sloppy pint at the end. Both tours are very expensive and the Jameson one is like an advertising expedition! There's some good info on whiskey to be found though.

Dublin castle's nice to walk around , well, the "Dubh-linn" anyway. Nice little garden, heart and lifeblood of Dublin and all that. The parks are nice - Stephen's Green and Merrion Sq and that secret one off Harcourt St.

Just bring your friends around your own little tour and show them what you like.

I recently came across these iwalks. Might be difficult to coordinate if you are too many people. I did it with one friend and it worked out very interesting.
Or just have a look at the brochures. That might give you an idea as well.

I disagree, tourists love the Guinness Storehouse. Particularly the view at the bar on top.

Some great replies guys, thanks for your help so far.

When you work in Dublin you become oblivious to all the landmarks, places of interest etc. that you are beside on a daily basis.

There's also the Dublin Zoo, the new wax museum, the CSI exhibition at the Ambassador.

The Casino in Marino is a surprisingly good attraction.

Fair enough, tourists might "like" it but it's still shite and in no war representative of what Dublin is about or what it's like to live here. Also, you learn very very little about Guinness , how it's made, the history and any other Irish brews.

    The view is ok though.
