Backgrounder- Run apps in the background so you can do things like continue to listen to WunderRadio while texting or playing a game on the iPhone

MxTube- Download Youtube videos to your iPhone easily so you can watch them without needing Internet.

Winterboard- Use custom themes on your phone

sbsettings - provides quick shortcuts for turning things on/off, such as bluetooth, wifi, etc ... more description here ... http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/02/sbsettings-offers-faster-method-to-manage-your-iphone-settings.html

ifile (file manager with built in web server for simple file transfers)
    dtunes (music/video/torrent file manager)
    quake4iphone
    abaia (chess)
five icon dock (lets you add an extra icon to your dock)

scummvm (lets you play classic PC adventure games, monkey island, full throttle etc. - you need to add this respoitry in 'sources' to see it: http://urbanfanatics.com/cydia)

Edit: forgot about Unrestictor3G. Costs $2, but handy aswell...

Just found this thread and installed biteSMS. Great app. I cant believe i have gone so long without it. Only problem is you need a licence for it, only costs a fiver but still.
    <snip - no discussion of illegal software>

The app Docs is handy. Lets you view the folder structure of the phone and opens most format of files.

MxTube and Backgrounder are good to have as well. Cycorder is a must have for non-3GS phones. Skype would be usless without VoIPover3G for me also. Boss prefs is handy also.

Anyone else have any other essential iPhone apps I'm missing?

"Poof!" lets you show/hide springboard icons. First one I hid was "Stocks" :pac:

"FakeCarrier" lets you change the carrier name that appears on the top left (I put in my nickname for example), not especially useful I grand you but a nice little extra to personalise your phone.

Guys, I'll say it one more time - mention of illegal software, or software to crack legitimate software is against the charter, not to mention unethical.

There is to be no more mention or discussion of such software.

I find PDANet pretty good. Basically automates the process of tethering over your wireless connection to use the phones 3G connection.

Anyone aware of an app like 'Eircom Grabber' (or indeed 'Dessid') that works for UPC networks?

No such thing as UPC use WPA as default. Dessid only works because the older Eircom accounts have default WEP passwords assigned to them (based on the ssid) and a lot of people haven't bothered changing them.

unfortunately statusnotifier doesnt work ios 4.0

x2. I wouldn't have bothered jailbreaking for anything else.

Nearly killed me to pay $20 for it though, but it's worth it.

Same here, but for the ease of use and convenience I got with the free trial I took the plunge. It's paid for now and there's been no looking back.

BTstack is a good app. Allows you to connect a Bluetooth GPS receiver to your Itouch or Ipad and use it with Google Maps, or apps like Runkeeper and Everytrail.

I have a question. If I update to 4.0.2 on my itouch. I lose all my'jailbreak' apps right? how do I back them up or whatever so I don't lose the ones I paid for when I update and jailbreak again?

Is that 100% confirmed ? What about this guide ?
    redsn0w ?

My apologies, I was thinking of an iphone 4 while reading that.

You can infact jailbreak either an iPhone 3G (which doesn’t rely on an unlock) or an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) using the redsn0w method.

I do not believe you can back them up in anyway. I may be wrong.

When is the question. Could be a few months before a jb is released

NO, There will be another jailbreak soon. Remember every single update that has come out to stop a jailbreak from working!! Another jailbreak gets released.

Also when the new jailbreak was released, We were told that there was over 7 different ways they could have done it and the pdf exploit was just one.

so my guess is they are already working on it but wont release the new one until the next big apple update comes out(So everything can get all the fixes on it and also be able to jailbreak it)

some excellent new tweaks out recently for iOS 4.x

FolderCloser: very annoying when you close an app and return to home screen, the folder you were in, is still open....Not anymore with this puppy, awesome..

InfiniFolders: removes the 12 app limit, and let you scroll inside the folder with 12+ apps ! pretty nifty fifty...
