    Hey Joe,

Sorry not ignoring your thread, but I'm pretty much up to my eye's with discussion over on judoforum.com

I should have been in Rotterdam this weekend, but stupid hole here forgot to book flights, left it until the last minute and just couldn't justify the money the airlines were asking.

So now my mate is staying at the Rotterdam Hilton on his lonesome and I'm limited to damn recordings, not even a live stream :(

Sounds cool, I might hop over to judoforum then...

Wow yeah going over would have been amazing?! I was thinking of going to the GB world cup in September, a bit closer to home and I think flights are still cheap!

It was an unusual World Championships alright, no men's title for the Japanese and only two medals for their men!

Regarding Britain, it's a while since they've been a major force in world Judo. A new national coach was appointed last year, an excellent Frenchman called Patrick Roux and they've launched a centralised training system based in Dartford but it'll take time before improved results (if any) are seen. As far as I can tell they're building towards London 2012.

If you guys are up for travelling to Judo tournaments then I can highly recommend "Le Tournoi de Paris". It's arguably the biggest competition after the Olympics and World Championships and the biggest annual Judo tournament held in Europe. Judo is big in France and it's amazing to sit in a packed arena of enthusiastic Judo fans (especially when Teddy Riner is fighting!). It's held every February and as a Grand Slam event it normally attracts big names looking for Olympic qualification points.

Sadly no and it has been many years since Ireland sent someone to a World or European championships. A full list of participants for Rotterdam is available here: World Championships 2009

Yup meant to go to the tournoi last year but the flights got expensive cos we left it really late. We (Trinity Judo) will hopefully go over this year as it would be an amazing experience! If anyone wants to come with, get in touch?! Was at Bercy during the summer and the facilties seem great, as well as L'Institut du Judo, very cool also.

I'm 50/50 the Tournoi-de-Paris next year as I'm hoping to be serving in Chad with the Defence Forces anytime from late January onwards.

Wow Makikomi, good luck with that! I've recently become interested in maybe applying to the Defence Forces, after I finish college it would be, fallen outta love with the idea of an office job. I hear the applications tripled this year though so I imagine it would be quite competitive. Do you know anything about the recruitment these days? I have so many questions not really fitting with a martial arts forum, maybe I'll PM you. Can i ask who you are? Joe Moore from Cavan/Trinity judo here.

In regards to recruitment within the defence forces, well like all public sector jobs now - there's a recruitment embargo :(

I'm training in Portmarnock & Daigokan Judo clubs.
