In the System Settings section, there is a option to Back-Up your PS3 HDD. Plug in an external HDD and back-up the files, swap out the HDDs and restore to the new HDD.

    Simples!

a quick google gives this and this

looks like it has to be fat32*, so there is a size limit on the size of partitions. I don't have a ps3, so I don't know how well it would handle these...

    * sorry it after reading the links, this is only for the external device.

The size limit only comes into play when you are copying large HD files. Not sure the exact size...think the files have to be either under 4gig or 8gig. Only affects people who have 720p or 1080p downloaded media content and they can usually split the files.

As regards FAT32..that partition limit is only over MS's implementation of FAT32. There are plenty of 3rd party utilities which allow you to format the full capacity of your drive in windows. And it doesn't apply in this case..as the PS3 will format the drive to it's full capacity anyway when you insert it. The current max capacity that will fit is a 500gig 2.5" sata drive, the fastest one overall being the 500gig 5400rpm WD Scorpio Blue (faster then even Seagates 7200rpm 500gig according to TechReport's recent shootout). Also, Western Digital have just launched 12.5" mm 750gig and 1tb 2.5" drives but it's not certain if they will fit in the PS3 yet.

Of course when you fit the drive and bootup, as the new PS3 firmware now fits on the drive and the flash memory, your new drive will be missing the update. You will need a memory stick with the latest firmware for your PS3 in a folder structure called PS3 \ UPDATE (get it off Sony's site). Follow the instructions and the PS3 will format the drive and install the firmware from the memory stick. After that you can restore your previous PS3 image from a backup. (off another drive).

most important thing is USE THE CORRECT SIZE SCREWDRIVER if it isnt a snug fit, dont use it or you'll wreckt he threads on the screws

I used my ipod to back up the profiles/saves on the PS3

Definitely use the right screw driver, or pliers
