Maybe this is obvious to some, but I'm relatively new to the game. When you hit a drive and the fairway is fairly soft, the ball sometimes plugs deep into the ground. Now obviously you can't hit it like that, so what's the actual ruling on moving it?Do you place it forward/behind/beside where it landed?

    25-2 Embedded ball
A ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely-mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green. "Closely-mown area" means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

    Well that's fairly clearcut, cheers!

So does that mean the rough if it is closely mown or what?

I would imagine if the rough was cut to "fairway height or less" then it would probably be fairway rather than rough. Just my sixpence worth.....
