    In six years, the son will be one-fifth the age of the mother.

    Y = Mother's age
    X = Boy's age

    21 + X = Y
    X + 6 = (Y+6)/5

    x = y - 21

    (y - 21) + 6 = (y + 6)/5

    5y - 105 + 30 = y + 6
    5y - y = 6 + 105 - 30

    4y = 81

    y = 20.25

    21 + x = 20.25

    x = .75

    Mother's age: 20 years, 3 months
    Boy's age: - 9 months
    Father's activity: Playing hide the purple parsnip.

    I did that out & was getting frustrated because I couldn't work it out. I used to love maths(bar learning theorms for LC) in school. Read the spoiler & was pleasantly surprised & I got an aul chuckle for myself.

    On a side note, have been nosing around boards but hadn't seen this forum. I'm absolutely delighted now.
    Must learn how to block the text(edit:Excellent)

    Given the possibility of artificial insemination & the father having donated the sperm some date prior to that insemination, there is an extremely large number of possibly correct answers to your riddle.

    Given the fact that you could work out the answer in the begining, the smart arse answer doesn't make you smart
