    Hi,

Planning a driving holiday around France for mid september.
We will be getting a ferry to Holyhead, then staying in London a couple of nights. Then we get a ferry from Dover to Calais and make our way down to Lyon.
I'm looking for help/recommendations on a nice area/town/city to stay for a day&night that is midway between Calais and Lyon? (as this drive is very long).

Thanks in advance for any help.

All roads are going to bring you through Paris more or less. What about a night there? Or even Versailles?

    Thanks for the reply.
Was in Paris last year (great city) so was hopefully to avoid it this time. I'll have a look at Versailles as we didn't make it out that far last time.

    Cheers

Or how about Reims? Orrrr, we're staying near Auxerre next week - near Chablis. Supposed to be lovely!

Brilliant, just had a look at Auxerre and the Chablis region, sounds like the type of place/area we were looking for.

    cheers

If you arrive in from the North of Paris onto the ring road you can head down the East side along the A104. At exit 11 you will go into a small commerical area with a Mister Bed and a Kyriad.

I have stayed at this Kyriad a few times. Its a Travelodge-esque type place and not far for Versailles the next day maybe.

We did a Keycamp holiday down that neck of the woods a few years ago, we overnighted Lille then drove to Lyon, I think Lille might be a but too close to Calais for you as your starting from London. You might be better off to head a bit further down, maybe Reims or Troyes.
Another thing to consider is the toll roads, some people actually cross over the border to miss them. Not sure if you still need a pass (sticker on windscreen) to drive on the motorways in Switzerland, so if you intend heading in there it might be worth checking it out.

Yeah, I've heard that the tolls can be a killer when driving around France. Going to try and avoid them on the shorter drives.

Avoiding them brings you onto the "A" roads and through the towns and villages, you may save on the toll but you'll pay in time. If time isn't important then it's a much nicer drive, I find motorway driving very boring really, just whizz, whizz and whizz.
