    For the budget the dell if fine. However never ever use a laptop for storing anything especially photos. They are not designed as long term storage devices. At the very least back all your photos/docs onto DVD and store them carefully.

    Also I was thinking of getting an external hard-drive for her - would this be suitable for longterm storage?

    EDIT: Sorry one last question, I think I will go with the inspiron unless there is a reason not to but there is 3 different specs and I am not sure which is best and what the difference is between the.     It would certainly be more suitable anyway.

    Really depends on your budget. Normally with the dells you are bets to pick the cheapest one and add on anyhting you feel they might need.
