Iphone - Turning Data Connection to "as needed"

    Hey all,
Just a query. I know when I was away, I turned off Data Roaming, and I managed to get 3 days out of my iphone (Turned on data romaing when I wanted to connect). When Im home, I barely get 18 hours. I came to the conclusion that my connection is constantly running in the background. So, what Im wondering is, is there anyway to having the data connection only come live when I try to connect to something. I have 3G turned, so only using Edge. I know I can just change the APN settings so it doesnt connect, but the live data connection will still be there (without actually connecting to anything).

    Any help will be appreciated.

Good question! I'm not aware of anything that will switch a data connection on dynamically when needed, I suppose the reason for this is it can take a while to switch on and get working? If you're jailbroken you can install a toggle in sbsettings that will switch Edge or 3G on with a button press from any application though, which saves you delving into menus and whatnot.

I had that toggle, but it didnt really work. It would turn it off and then around 15 seconds later turn it back on. I wonder do I have anything on in the background that is constantly connected. Ill have a gander and look again!

Just turned off Location Services and Notifications. Ill leave them off for a while and see.

Obviously make sure that Wifi is set to off and that push is off and that fetch is set to manual for emails.

All turned off. I know the battery isint great, but after experiencing how long it lasted when I was abroad, I know I can get more out of it!

the battery's a joke. i was using the ipod in airplane mode for an hour this morning and it used 1% of the battery. uturned off airplane mode and went on im+ and it lost 4% in about two minutes. grrrr..

Are you sure the battery's not just lasting longer because you're not using apps that use data?

My battery always last for days when abroad because I'm not on Safari, eBay, Facebook, WunderRadio, iFooty etc. That's what drains the battery!
