Can anyone help? I've been trying for days....
I have 02 mobile broadband, and am trying to connect up the wii by using a belkin wireless usb adapter. The wii cannot find anything when it searches to connect, and then asks me for an SSID number.
Has anyone connected their wii in this way??? I'm about to give up.

The wii has built in wifi - you dont need to add anything to the wii. The SSID is the "name" of your wireless access point. It lets the wii know what access point to connect to.

    SSID

I presume the Belkin is in your desktop or laptop? If that's the case you might get away with setting up an Ad-Hoc wireless network on your computer, give it a name (the SSID) and see if the Wii can see it - don't set up any security till you get the basic connection working. Then add WEP/WPA/whatever security and see if you can use Internet Connection Sharing or a network bridge (I've no experience of the O2 device, assume one or other can be done) to then get the Wii to connect to the network.
Bear in mind, until there's an internet connection on the network you'll probably get an error from the Wii even if it connects, but if it sees the SSID you're probably on the right track.

yes, the usb adapter is plugged into my laptop. I thought the wifi on the wii would automatically detect it, but things can never be so simple... So the SSID number is just a name that I make up? I know nothing about setting up a wireless network...

The wireless dongle on your laptop and the wii are both designed to connect to a wireless router, not connect to each other. You might have a chance as Banjo suggests by setting up in "Ad-Hoc" mode on both the laptop and the wii.

If you get the wii connected to the laptop, you will then need to configure internet connection sharing in windows to allow the wii connect through your laptop to the internet.

It might require some fiddling but the above solution should work. The other option is to use something like a Dovado UMR Router. It allows to share you O2 broadband (usb dongle) and its a wireless router also.

I would not recommend Mobile Broadband for gaming the ping times or latency are too long to support realtime gaming.
It would be fine to use something like the Dovado router in conjunction with your mobile broadband dongle as long as you were only using
Check out the posts n the Midband forum (under Tech -> Net & Comms Broadband) for more info on the dovado router & alternative routers.

if u have ur usb 02 thing in ur laptop, stick the belkin in the laptop as well.

then click start menu, go into network connections (show all connections)

then right click the 02 connection (make sure belkin is still attached) and click bridge conections. that'll combine the 02 with the belkin.

then u need to set up connection sharing through the belkin, so...........

right click the belkin, go to properties and click on the advanced tab. click the tick box for Allow others to connect through this internet connection.

thats all off the top of my head so expect some different things, especially if ur on vista.

never used one of those belkin things so dunno what the story is with setting up the SSID with them. also, the above assumes it gets picked up as a network adaptor. if its something else then none of the above will work!! lol
