Hi guys, I finished my BA last year and thought I'd add to my marketabililty by doing an MA in International Relations. Anyway, with the current climate, it seems that the only employment available is in the private sector e.g accounting/marketing etc. which don't really interest me. I would really like a career in diplomacy or in the civil service. Is there anyone who's in my position and can offer any advice? Any information would be gratefully received.

    Thanks guys.

Sign up to Publicjobs.ie, although given the current embargo it may be a while before they start hiring. Positions for 3rd Sec. in dept. of Foreign Affairs used to be advertised every two years, but once again i'd wager it could be a while. Sadly, the MA will give you feck all advantage though - I've an MA in European Development Studies myself - and they tend to hire people with a bit of 'life experience' and from fairly diverse backgrounds for e.g. I know a second sec. who was in recruitment for years and shares an office with a former vet.

My class has been told (and are learning first hand!) that there is pretty much nothing out there just now related to our field(s) of knowledge. Even internships are being filled by mid-level people because the competition is so fierce these days. A group from my class all applied for the same 'internship' and were all rejected (some of us are older and have had careers in other areas before coming to politics/development/conflict management) - we all got the same letter saying they were raising the bar to include management experience because the standard of applicants was so high.

Most of us are going overseas (usually unpaid) or heading down the PhD route. I'm gonna wait it out for 12 months or so, then probably head off to London. We've already crossed Third Sec. off our lists!

a company called Accenture is accepting applicants from various backgrounds. However, the work is management/business consulting related, so in your case it would be consulting with international relations.
