I'm going getting this in Currys tomorrow. :DSamsung 40" HDTV Fantastic price methinks, especially considering it would set you back €869 in Argos. Maddness!!

Anyway, currys seem to be pretty good for bargains and are usually on a par with amazon prices.

Is there something i'm missing regarding the price of this TV? The link is to the Currys' UK site, so are you saying that the price on that site is the same as the price in Irish Currys' stores?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭friendface

Sorry, its £479 in the northern stores where I'm getting it. I don't know what price it is in currys in the south because they don't have a website for the south. There seems to be a huge variation between NI/ROI prices in general tho, as can be seen with Argos Ireland and Argos UK so I would guess Currys is similar. They are having a huge sale this weekend in the North for the bank holiday tho so that's why I pointed it out. If anyone lives nearby or is travelling over the weekend, it would be worth it.

What are the main considerations when lookin at TV such as this? Thought was basically about FullHD/HD Ready, and contrast ratio but is there more to it than that? Lookin to get 40" TV but more i look more confused i get!

As suppafly pointed out its only 50hz, this article explains it more and may be something you'd want to read ?...http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Benefits-of-100Hz-Or-200Hz-LCD-Or-Plasma-Television&id=1668599

As suppafly mentioned, "50 Hz" is often mentioned when discussing LCD TVs.

When people mention 50 Hz or 100 Hz, they're referring to how fast an LCD TV's screen refreshes. A faster refresh rate means that fast motion video, e.g. sports, action movies etc, will look more fluid; well, that's the idea anyway. Some LCD TVs that only support 50 Hz can handle fast motion almost as well as LCD TVs that support 100 Hz. How good an LCD TV's 100 Hz technology is depends on how it is implemented by the manufacturer. Some manufacturers' 100 Hz TVs are better than others, and by reading reviews before buying and, if possible, seeing a TV in action will also help you make your mind up about whether the feature is one you want or need.

If you're looking for some more information on the subject then you can read more about it here.

EDIT: I see sedohre beat me to it. ;)

    Friendface,

before you go hotfooting it up the North, you might want to check out D.I.D first..;) I bought this tv two weeks ago and got it for €579 as I had found it in my local Harvey Norman store on special offer, and in Powercity cheaper.. and they agreed to match the price. Its only €30 odd euro more expensive than the Currys price you got, and sure you would spend near that going up on petrol :)

Its a great tv for sure...i'm just having some difficulty with the correct picture settings to use..:)

Best of luck with your purchase !

I wanted to buy this when it was 550 in Power City.

Will have to wait for a while I guess. Not heading up North for it.

Which is still a rip off, €549 would be about right. £479 converts to €545!

At current rates £479 translates to €546 (on credit card). Take the 15% VAT and Add 21.5% and you get €592.

I abhor rip-offs, but this one sounds right to me.

Had a look at this tv when it was on sale in power city, it looks the part compared to the rest, I would have bought it had I been in need of a tv.

Haven't checed but I assume it's on sale because it's and old model?

I put my Dad towards a 42 Samsung Plasma in DID during the week that he got for €600. I set it up in his sisters for him and tuned it in etc to cable - taking it out and setting it up the set looks nice and picture is fine, but then I heard the sound! It was crap! - no matter how I tried customizing it, the sound was just really hollow and thinny.

I am sure not all are the same but I have heard bad reviews on the sound of some low end Samsung's, and indeed high end too but I have two 6 series Samsung's - the LE46A656's - and the sound is top class.

This might help in your decision making. If you are putting it through a receiver/amp then not and issue but just maybe check out review etc.

It is great though to see such competition on and the availability of cheap large TV's. Cannot wait till same happens with the new LED screens:D I really want to get some of those ultra thin LED Samsung's - Doh, out that credit card away!!

    Thank god for the sane.

Why not compare prices in Thailand Zonda? Just becasue we can drive to the North doesn't make it any less of a foreign country.

I know this is probably being pedantic, but (546/1.15)*1.215=576.86, so as usual we're still paying over the odds

You can't look at what something costs in another country an do a straight currency conversion.

Thats just stupid. Why not look at Thailand and see a TV there for 200e?

Different countries. different VAT, different populations, different minimum wages, different rents etc etc etc.

    FFS

The fact that you can't drive to Thailand is critical to the discussion.

The shipping and travelling costs to Thailand would make any trip to avail of the cheaper TVs there uneconomic. Not to mention customs

I'm sure the nearest city to several people in the republic of Ireland is in Northern Ireland.

    FFS.

Hi Guys, Currys in Galway has this Samsung LE40B530P 40" 1080P LCD TV for €599 ( not in stock, but can be got in 3 days) Now the chap, i was talking to says, that if you are playing the Playstation/X Box, colours are not the best, he says their's another one, i think its the Samsung LE40B551P 40" 1080P LCD TV ( not certain on the exact Model Number) but its €100 more, but a better TV.

Are you for real? It still doesn't make it a rip-off. You are missing th point completely, go an get your cheap gear in the North by all means but its not a "rip-off" here just becasue its a few euros dearer in this case. It is perfectly in line with our higher costs outlined above.

You missed the point of the Thailand analogy. Their much lower costs mean much lower prices.

I never said it was a rip off. But wasnt the same argument used by Tesco to justify their higher prices in the republic for years, until enough people made them do something about it. The idea that the international outlets arent trying to get as high a price as possible is idiotic - clear evidence from the grocery sector that we were paying over the odds.

Anyway I'm not thread spoliing, but you said "why not look at Thailand for blah blah blah". Im sure you could compare the prices but they have no direct impact on people living in the ROI. The price of goods in Northern Ireland does - making comparing prices is worthwhile. Anyway, Its an argument for another forum and sorry for thread spoling.

Powercity seem to be very competitive for TVs at the moment and are worth monitoring. Have been keeping my eye out for a Samsung 650 for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Right last I will say on the matter to keep the thread free-ish. I am not talking about Tesco, we are talking about a specific TV that works out about 50e dearer here than up North.

Someone called that a rip-off, completely untrue when our higher VAT, wages etc etc etc are taken into account. I showed that you can't compare the two prices in different countries and then determine the higher priced country is being ripped-off on that basis alone.

It's a bargain, plain and simple.

    Agreed.

Alright then not a rip off, but from a simple minded point of view of driving up to road to Newry or whatever, it is €50 cheaper

Could you quote me the model number on the box? I see it in a curries brochure but it doesn't have the P part at the end of the serial number.

Also, does it have no Scart socket?

It only has one scart -which is a bit of a drawback.

    Also no USB port.

Apart from that it is well kitted.

Didn't notice all these replies. I currently have this set up in my bedroom (temporarily) and it's a perfect size. I've been using it for a few days and have to say i'm pretty impressed. I did notice that it was 50hz when I bought it but apart from that the spec is pretty decent. Tbh, I don't mind the fact that it has a lower refresh rate when it comes at such a low cost. The 100hz were all £700minimum.

Btw, the reason I originally bought it up north was because I lived and worked there over the Summer so was only a 5minute trip down the road to currys for me. However, when you compare this to Southern prices, I still think it's worth travelling to get a bargain. I also picked up a 1tb harddrive in currys for £69 so there are plenty deals to be had when you're shopping for electronics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

For 600 it is looking like a definite purchase.

Does the P at the end of the serial code matter? Some stores seem to have it in there and some don't, was wondering if it was actually two different teles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,023 ✭✭✭Barr

Has anyone seen a good deal on the B550 recently ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 jason16

I'm picking up the LE40B530P for €578 later at Currys. (Well actually ordering it with Free delivery within 2 days).

I'm hoping the comments in this thread are still valid that its a bargain. Its a jump up from my faded out old 28" CRT so I've decided not to spend another €200 to get a better picture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 812 ✭✭✭friendface

Well, I've had it now for the past 3 months and have to say I have no complaints. I have it hooked up to my media hard-drive via a HDMI cable also and it works flawlessly. As was probably mentioned previously, the only downside to this TV compared with other higher end models is the refresh rate, 50Hz in this case where some more expensive models support 100 or even 200Hz. So there might be some motion blur when watching fast paced sports but not really something I'd be prepared to pay an extra €300-400 to avoid

A tall tale me reckons because my eyes are telling me the UK price is 549£!(on the currys.ie site, it says UK price is £599)

Odd, i've never seen that set for sale in this country or any of the normal UK online retailers, its not on the Samsung UK site either.

It is on the German Samsung site though, here's a comparison between it and the superior 40B650

    http://av.samsung.de/produkte/subtype_compareproducts.aspx?type=Fernseher&subtype=LCD%20TV&guids=2a69a1b7-fce6-4c6e-90ea-56b2ff7d2ac9,5642132f-529a-4c25-bc88-b25d89281590,

To me, it looks like a 5 series with the 100Hz feature added on, because the 650 is superior in a few ways as can be seen on that comparison, better contrast and a different/better image processor

That said, and i know currys aint tellin the truth about the UK price but 636€ is actually a decent price for a 100Hz samsung set down south. if you're close to a Currys north of the border, that 549£ converts to 606€ but seeing as the banks here dont ever give the true exchange rate, it'd probably be closer to 620€, in which case the 636€ price down here seems like a pretty good deal. Probably not a bargain but still a very good price, considering that 40B650 wouldnt be got for any less than €850 down here.

Buy with confidence anyway, thats definitely a fine set:)
