Breaking news at moment so no link yet to post.

A Garda camera van has been set on fire whilst the van was occupied. this has taken place in Cork on the Blarney Road.

Apparently the garda escaped uninjured but this is serious stuff certainly.

    More to follow I'm sure

Thankfully the Garda wasn't physically injured, even so, I wish him a speedy recovery.

Absolutely horrendous attack to be carried out on a Garda member.
Thankfully there appears to be no physical injuries.
I wish him a speedy recovery from this ordeal and hope the culprit is brought to justice.

Not that it's a defence, but very possibly the attacker did not realise there was a Garda in the van, but presumed it was automatic.

Not a defence though as the fact remains a Garda could have been killed. Disgraceful stuff and nothing short of stupidity on the part of the person respnsible - but I do feel it unlikely that someone targeting something as trivial as a traffic van would effectivey firebomb a Garda on purpose.

I have to disagree. If someone is capable of arson on a state vehicle....then physologicly they would be more likely to inflict injury to a Garda. Also arson is one of the few sentences that carrys life imprisonment. Considered one of the most serious offences in the state.

while what you are saying is possible, when you consider the garda station was firebombed twice recently it would be far more likely someone targeted the gardai on purpose

And that's hopefully the end of single officer speed detections. Best of luck getting back on top to member who was attacked.

    Hope that garda is ok.

Its two fingers to the establishment, van, man, community, guard, judge... Fear the man that has nothing to lose.

see in the paper today that allegedly it was one of Limerick's most vicious gangs that are being blamed for this incident.

Hope the member concerned makes a speedy recovery

I wasn't aware Blarney had been attacked. Certainly makes it more likely that it was intended to cause harm.

All I was looking to do was avoid tarring someone with the brush of a capital murderer if indeed they only intended to be a vandal. I was not offering an excuse or defence for either, both are a disgrace - but obviously one is more disgraceful than the other.

Either way, I wish the Garda the speediest possible return to duty.
