I'm thinking of getting a new pair of glasses for the bike, no particular preference just looking for something with changeable lenses as I like to use clear glasses on cloudy days. Any advice appreciated.

Me personally, I'm on my third pair in just over a year. I just got the €15 ones in Argos which are as good as the pair of BBBs I paid €40 for. Before them I had a really good pair of Bloc glasses but the lenses weren't interchangable but they worked really well. The €2 shop has ones with interchangeable lenses, for €2 (surprise, surprise) you couldn't go wrong and if they really are shyte you can throw them away and you've lost €2 instead of a lot more.

I'd be willing to spend a few € to get a decent pair, I only want the changeable lenses as I always wear them just to keep wind/flies/grit etc out of my eyes and I'd prefer not to have a dark lens on a typical dull Irish day.

I'm currently sporting a a pair of Lidl's finest but I'd like to upgrade to a decent pair.

Oakley Radars are pretty good, great lenses but the frames seem a bit flimsy.

Probikekit glasses come with 5 sets of lenses and are on sale at about 70% off at the moment. Going for between 10-13 euro with free delivery to Ireland. I bought 5 pairs today. I am a bit of a fan you see, I think they are great value for the money. 3 different styles so you are bound to see something that floats your boat.

I absolutely love my Oakley half jacket carbon fibre print glasses. Very easy to change lenses. I've been meaning to buy polarized lenses for quite a while but haven't bothered.

I had a pair of these. They're very good, especially for the price, but they're not very durable. The second time I dropped mine on the road the frame was done for.

Oakleys are OK but stupidly expensive; you can get perfectly good interchangable lenses for a fraction of the price.

I have custom Oakley Flak Jackets (£145) and M:Vision DArcs (£30). The Oakleys look better, but that's it. Both have safety tested lenses IIRC.

The Oakleys also feel pretty cheap, construction wise.

i wear prescription glasses, so at the moment im just wearing my prescription sunnys

luckily, they have polarised lenses, i cant give advice on glasses, but make sure you get a polarised lense, once you use them, you`ll actually wonder how you ever got by without them,

Oakleys are mad expensive but you can always justify the price in some way when you see something you like, found an Airgas catalouge at work and when ordering my safety garb for the year changed my usual eye gear for a couple of pairs of UVEX and Smith and Wesson sports safety glasses with interchangeable lenses, couldn't believe it when they arrived as are far better quality than my original Oakley M frames which to be honest looked like they were made on the same taiwanese conveyor belt that chucks out lego which was a pity considering the price!

I had a pair of Spiuks Ventix's for the past few years and the came with interchangeable lenses (sun, clear and night). I found them comfortable and at €70 (i think) not bad value for money. One concern I had when riding on my aero bars the top of the frame slightly blocked my forward vision, but I didn't spend a huge amount of time on the bars. The vents in the glasses worked well and rarely steamed up. I lost these glasses during a race and for a few weeks just used a cheap pair of Aldi glasses but have upgraded to a pair of Rudy Project Syluro, only have them a week or so but are very light and comfy and no issues when in the aero position. They have interchangeable lenses but have to be bought separately.

If anyone out there has a pair of Spuik Ventix glasses and want some spare lenses let me know as mine or no use to me now.

I had the same problem, wanted clear lenses for dull days and tried several makes of interchangeable lens glasses over the years. The problem with all of them I found was the hassle of changing lenses, having to carry the extra lenses if out for the day, then cleaning the inevitable finger marks after changing them, etc.

I would recommend Rudy Projects, mine have the photochromic lens that changes from clear to dark grey when / if the sun comes out. Gosportspex also have them for slightly less, I think this is where I bought mine actually.

For a lower budget, I agree with Lumen - the M: Vision Darcs are great value, comfortable, excellent quality for the price and they provide good protection (wide / deep lenses). The yellow / orange lenses are great for overcast days.

I'd also recommend Tifosi for good value / quality, had a pair of photochromic ones for years but unfortunately they got stolen...

I second the M:Vision DArcs recommendation. They're pretty cheap but more durable than other cheap glasses. (That said, I haven't dropped them yet...)

I have them too. Agree with the above but they look crap.

I'd recommend Rudy Project Rydons. I also have a pair of Briko glasses that I was perfectly happy with for years, but the Rudys are a much better pair of glasses.

When I was buying them, the cheapest place I saw them was Chain Reactions, but if you know someone in the U.S., Rudy Project USA has a great deal where you get a free helmet, spare lenses, t-shirt, bag, and hat. You can also pay a little extra to upgrade the helmet. (I bought a pair of Rydons from Chain Reactions last Christmas, and this summer I got the brother in Boston to pick up this package for me).

Not true. In a smash do you really want the glasses you are wearing to turn to flying shards of debris? As someone whos face and head has scars from smashed less-than-oakley glasses its just not worth being scabby.

If you want to buy a good few pairs of replacement lenses for the rydons I have some to sell. No need for them since one set of lenses and the frames shattered and ripped my face to bits.

Are the Oakley glasses more shatter proof than the Rudy Project ones, cause I'd be very tempted by the photochromic lenses?

    Yes.

i got the photochromic lenses too. The quality of the lenses is vastly superior to rudys and the rest. and the "hydropohic" gimmick they go on about? its not a gimmick, it works!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭Ghost Rider

I was told by someone who works for Madison that the M:Vision Darcs are "constructed from shatterproof plastic".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,232 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

There are two types of Rudy lens. One is shatterproof, and hard to find. The more common one is not Tunney-proof. On mobile now so can't google the names.

Tunney, I can understand why you slag the Rudys, but that doesn't make anything that isn't Oakley similarly dangerous.

Bolle for instance make safety glasses, so I'd expect their cycling ones to be decent.

edit: Impact-X are the better Rudy lenses. Good like finding them in an attractive colour on a decent frame.
