hi all!! just wondering what you think covers a b post. i know some posts cant be gaged as its a certain job but I also see ppl in my school doing very little for tehir post.
my problem is i got a b post last year. have worked very hard for it etc but its a quite general title. the principal seems to think he cant get me to do everything under the b post title. I just want to know do i have to keep doing everything. in the jb title he would be able to argue it covers pretty much anything that would benefit the school. it is kind of a pr role with extras.

    thanks in advance

There are always some people that will do very little for their post.

Some people might have a responsibility for example for an annual event and as a result, might not do a lot for most of the year but in the run up to the event are very busy indeed.

I wouldn't think of it so much in hours as in tasks that need to be done/managed.

I'm not really clear on what you're saying here-has the Principal actually given you a job title? If he hasn't, you should ask for a list of duties. Every school has a schedule of duties for post-holders.

As there are no promotional posts being filled at the moment, I'd say there are a lot of post-holders being landed with extra duties, so you could be lumped with some extra work for a while yet.

This is a minefield .There's war at our place every few years over this .As far as I know there is NO official prescribed number of hours per week/month/year that are meant to be filled by people engaging in these Special Duties Posts. This is despite our principal claiming that we were meant to be spending some ridiculous amount of time weekly at them ...Sure isnt it as simple as dividing the net financial renumeration by the number of hours the job takes to see if its worth your while ....At the rate our principal suggested (and claimed to be quoting official sources-yeah,maybe the Principals Association!!!)you would hardly be earning the legal minimum hourly rate !!!Mind you to turn down a prestigious Special Duties post would be very rare and surely frowned upon -not to mention maybe affecting your 'seniority' at the school...
Sadly the staff often turn upon itself with bitchy comments like "Shes got an easy job compared to mine " .In our place they seem to have gone out of their way to make EVERYBODY'S post equally onerous !!!

thanks, yes I got a list of duties but some of them were quite vague. as my role involves pr anything that shows the school in a good light I seem to be in charge of. open night, grad, school awards, concerts actual pr for the media just to name a few. just wondering where the line is. thanks for the help

What does your TUI rep have to say. I take it you are in a VEC run college.

no not in a vec what makes you think that? wouldnt approach a rep anyway. was just wondering what ppl here thought. would want to really think/know that I was being asked to do too much. I am a pushover and the principal knows i wouldnt refuse really!

Hi I am open to correction on this but as far as I know you can't be asked to take on more responsibility in your post than you had last year. The reason for this is that the unions are asking us not too as if we take on the post which have been freed up this year due to retirement then we are basically saying to the DES we don't need those posts filled...if that makes sense.
Also the PR post should not have to organise events of any kind, they do have to be there to take photos and then to sort these with names, classes etc and submit to papers with relevant info.

As I said I am open to correction but I think you have the right under the union to refuse to take on more than in your job description. The job description can not be vague as they are needed for WSE.

This is WAY beyond the amount of work for a Special Duties Post !!!You will be crippled if you take all that on ...Theres possibly up to FOUR Special Duties posts worth of work there .Of course the size of your school and what standard of work they expect will be relevant but basically thats WAY too much .For God's sake try and protect yourself from being 'abused' because thats what it is if they think thats a 'B post' workload...Open Night/Grads/etc are NOT your responsibilty...(and would be a MASSIVE additional undertaking)

Maybe you should be organising the photos of those events (Open Night, Grad etc) and getting coverage of them in your local press(our A post holder of the PR job does that along with overseeing the website)...but organising them....???? You are being taken advantage of big time if you're expected to do all that!
