How long will car battery charge hold

When I changed my car in June I kept my old battery as I only had it a short time. It would not fit my new car so it is in the boot and I'll be puting it in garden shed soon. How long will it stay charged and how do i check if it is still charged? Thanks

It's really impossible to say. Some may hold charge for months others for weeks. Your best bet is to keep it charged on a regular basis using a standard car battery charger.

A voltmeter will give you a good indication of it's state of charge.

Get it out of your boot ASAP. It's a heavy object full of strong acid. Not a nice thing to have in a boot. If your shed isn't insulated the battery could go bad over the winter and no mater how often you charge it, if it gets a good freeze it could be ruined. Why are you keeping a battery that doesn't fit your car? By the time you need it, it could be useless.

It gets a good freeze in your car all the time, why would it be any different in a shed?

+1 on the get it out of your boot though, you dont want that rolling around if you have to brake suddenly.

Thanks Del2005 and pred racer, it did not occur to me about the acid. It is now in the shed. Shed is similar to http://www.shedstore.co.uk/. Could i put it in the utility room in the house. Would that be too warm? No rad in there but rads in hall beside it? Any danger there

It is in v good condition and might fit another car if i change. Didn't know about the freeze possibility

Just leave it in the shed. I have two batterys around the side of the house covered in plastic to stop them from getting wet. They still work besides needing a charge. Maybe one of them is dead.. but not because of the cold.
