    I've heard this mentioned on here a bit but don't know what it is about? What are the advantages to doing this and is it difficult to do?

    Jailbreaking basically allows you to install non-Apple authorized third party applications and enhancements on your iPhone/iPod Touch. On the iPhone, you need to jailbreak in order to unlock the phone for use with any carrier.

    That would be the main benefit for me, but a lot of the third party apps that you can install are real useful too, like tethering apps, apps that allow you to run other apps in the background, custom themes, etc.

    It's pretty easy to do these days though you can mess up your device - however, it usually is very easy to restore it and start from scratch if that happens. What do you have?

    I've got the 3GS, would this mean that I could run skype and surf the web at the same time?

    Yes, you can run Skype in the background and use Safari at the same time. Haven't tried it on my 3G but with the extra horsepower on the 3GS, I'd assume it would work quite well. Here's a guide (for jailbroken iPhones):
