New Online Business

    Hi all,

I am setting up a new web business which will be a search portal for a specific product.

I've ran into a few issues with hosting, lots of different advice out there that has really confused me. I really don't know what size this website will be - it could be huge! what kind of hosting should I look at?

I am also trying to sort out a pricing strategy for the site so that I know my break even cost and how many customers I need to get etc - but again running into a few issues when I don't know how many there will be. Any suggestions much appreciated

Start of as cheap as possible.

Go to someone like Blacknight and get some space on a shared server.

If/when/as your website grows you can switch very easily to a dedicated server.

thanks Keefg, is there a huge cost in upgrading servers etc as I won't know the exact cost to work into my pricing strategy

You are looking at around €90-100 for a shared hosting option to suit your needs initially and then possibly down the line rising to a VPS which would cost about €600 a year if you had a full running site with loads of traffic and members etc. You can also get cheaper a cheaper VPS option for around €300 but again it depends on your needs, the €600 would be more than adequate even if you were quite busy.

I agree with this. Don't get bogged down thinking of how many servers you might need. Concentrate on growing the business first and if it turns out you have too many people hitting the server then that's a nice problem to have.

Didn't do twitter any harm. Their scaling issues are well documented.

Get some cheap shared hosting for €5-€10 per month and if you need to scale up then look into a VPS. €15-€20 per month. If in the end you need a dedicated machine(s) then you're on to a winning idea.

I've used a few both here and abroad. for a .com domain I found godaddy.com were good but for a .ie domain with hosting I found letshost.ie a great service. fantastic value and excellent options. you'll get any configuration you'll need there and I would bet the best prices in Ireland too. In my experience they are not a member of the 'Rip off' brigade. Refreshing!
