Question about Supplementals...

Im a Bess student going in to 2nd year and i have to sit supplementals in one subject (Maths/Stats). I did reasonably in the summer exam but failed overall from poor MT and HT results. Also i was penalised 10% for lack of attendance at tutorials. So what im wondering is are supplementals a stand alone exam whereby you either fail or pass that one paper? Or does your supplemental result take the place of your summer result to see whether you have passed or failed. Hope that makes sense and thanks to anyone who has an answer for me. Cheers

If you do well in your supplemental then you still don't get a Third Class Honors or a 2.1 or any of that. You just get a pass, regardless of your overall average. I think that's what we were told, maybe I'm wrong. Is that what you were asking?

Sorry! I should have been more clear! Re-read my Post and it makes no sense! I realise you only get a pass or a fail but im wondering how is it decided whether i have passed or failed the supplemental exam. Is it Solely on the basis of the results of the supplemental paper or do they take in to account term results from during 1st year as in the original summer exams results.

Yeah i reckon it'd only be from the supplemental exam, like there probably wouldn't be compensation, if that's what you're asking?

Depending on the subject/course I seem to remember there being some level of compensation for Supplementals, no clue about BESS though.

But yeah, I think you have to pass the supps on their own merit, so minimum 40% (if that's your pass rate) overall for all the exams you're doing.

My info is pretty dated at this stage so best to check with someone from your department, or alternatively get onto Ashley (Education Officer) at education@tcdsu.org / 01 6468439.

    I'm assuming it's course specific.
Got this email from one of my Lecturers regarding the JF Biology supplementals:

The format of the written exam will be exactly as you sat before. Your continuous assesment marks will be applied to your marks.

For JF Computer Science we got a similar e-mail that just said coursework marks will be included.

It's a stand alone exam. None of your previous term tests or tutorial attendance matter. That's the case for BESS anyway.

Oh and your mark in the repeats is considered with your previous results in the main summer exams for compensation. As in if you got over 50% in at least one subject in the summer, then you only really need 30% to pass the repeat, (obviously don't aim for 30% though!)

Are u guys sure someone in BESS can still compensate a 30% score in the repeats? (assuming they already got over 50% in another subject)

I couldve sworn that they increase the compensation threshold to 35% in the supplementals... Or im just going mad...

This is from the BESS examination conventions :

The marks of the papers passed in the summer examinations in the Freshman years are considered together with those obtained in the autumn examinations. The only overall grade awarded in this case is a pass or fail, but compensation is allowed, an F1 in one paper being compensated by a mark of 50+ in two other papers. The usual exclusion rules
apply to this combined set of results.

So basically you can still compensate as long as it's over 30%

Yup. Unless you can find a reason to sit and pass supersupplementals.

Sorry I don't want to just come out and say you're wrong, but I've looked through both the BESS handbook (https://www.tcd.ie/bess/downloads/Booklet.pdf)
and the BESS examination guidlines (https://www.tcd.ie/bess/downloads/Exam%20Booklet%20June%2009%20Revision%20AM.pdf)

and in neither can I see where it says you need 35 to compensate in a supplemental. Maybe I'm just missing it, can you tell me which page of either document says it?

I'm sure that the same rules still apply and that a fail of more than 30 can be compensated with a grade of over 50. I've seen this rule in practice too, but if you can tell me where it says that I'll gladly admit I'm wrong.

Unfortunately my username and password don't work anymore (i'm a grad-woohoo!)-it's for my missus, she's an international student, and her username expired too.

Could someone check it for me please? She's in BESS, the exam was Political Science Research Methods
