DIY CIRAS Style Plate Carrier

    Heyho,

So, I'd like a nice plate carrier. I also like making things. I also recently discovered its very easy to sew things given a sewing machine and some patience.

On the DIY Tactical Fourms, theres a nice thread which goes through the basics of designing/building a real-steel plate carrier - and it looks pretty easy. Even more so for airsoft....

FYI: Heres the dimensions I'll be using - the BALCS standards are public domain via US Patent Office:

Before I begin however, I have a small (dumb) question - without plates installed, is a plate carrier floppy or semi-rigid? This might seem like a stupid question, but all the photos on the web have them standing up unaided as if they had some kind of padding/foam internally. Like this for example:

I'm guessing if this is the case, I can replicate it with some closed cell foam (like thin sleeping mat, perforated for ventilation - it doesn't need to be bulletproof...).

    Anyway, any other ideas?

    Dave

I am unsure of the answer but would like to wish you luck with this as I have seen some of your other projects and they have turned out great.:)

It all depends on the material grade used. I've seen them do both. Mine stood up rigid when it was new, and later developed a fold where the cummerbund part ends, s it usually folds over there now.

I'll have mine at Salute if you want a wee look. Good luck!

I have a RAV (Ranger Assault Vest) style plate carrier, it is semi-rigid. It doesn't have plates or anything in, just foam inserts, between them and the molle system on the outside it'll stand upright on it's own. Good luck with the build, if you figure out a way to make decent ones you could be on to a nice little money maker for yourself.

Most of the ranger style MOLLE vests are semi rigid and stand up by themselves no problem.

Ok, thanks for all the replies, I'm probably gonna go with internal perforated closed cell padding - it'll give it some shape, since I have no intentions of putting plates in it.

It'll probably be a few weeks before I have anything to show and tell (away on the holliers tomorrow), but watch this space...
