Movies that deserve a sequel and the ones you wished didnt.

Was just wondering is there any movies out there you loved and wished they had made a sequel to. Maybe just to carry on the story or you just loved the characters. Say why you love the movie and what they might have done if they where to make the sequel.

Alternatively what films did you like and wished they never made a sequel to. What did you like about the original and where did you think they went wrong with the sequel/s

The first ones that come to mind for me would be SERENITY. Just thought this movie was good fun with likeable characters. I would like to see another movie to learn more about the River character and what happened to her when taken by the aliance.
More details about the alliance and a more direct conflict with them in a bigger budget movie than the first would be great IMO.

One of the films i wished they never made a sequel of, is THE CROW.
Loved this movie when it came out. Such a dark movie with a great soundtrack. It was just a great revenge flick. I remember thinking, OH GOD NO, when i heard Brandon Lee was playing the part. He was terrible in any of his other roles id seen him in but how wrong i was.
This film should have been a stand alone movie especially because Brandon Lee lost his life on the set. To have made such a poor sequel like they did was disrespectful to the first movie and to Brandon Lee.

Robocop deserves another sequel, not a reboot as is currently being talked about, as it will never top Verhoevens masterpiece. I'd love to see Robocop as an older Murphy, he's become outdated as both a piece of machinery and a cop, have it set in a futuristic Delta City which OCP finally got around to building and set it further in the future, technology has passed by Robo and he's bitter about it, imagine Robocop meets Gran Torino

Speaking of Verhoeven, its such a pity Starship Troopers descended into crappy DTV sequels as the end of the original sets one up briliantly, a Verhoeven directed, original cast sequel would be amazing

As for movies that should have never been given or should get a sequel, Blair Witch and Cloverfield are the first two that come to mind

    District 9 :pac:

Obviously the matrix sequels kinda ruined the genre and saw is kinda taking the piss too :)

Always felt the first matrix sequel was not as bad as some made it out to be but the third was an absolute joke.

What I hated about Matrix Revolutions was that we go almost an hour of the movies running time where the three main characters of Neo, Trinity and Morpheous arent even on screen, i found it impossible to care about the battle in Zion as it was all nameless characters we'd just been introduced to, it just descended into robots fighting more robots. It only really kicks into high gear once Neo and Smith face off in the rain, but even that descends into one cgi figure hitting another one in the sky, compare that to the intensity of the train station brawl in the first movie where you genuinely were rooting for Neo to batter the **** out of Smith.

It also took the entire premise of the original movie, freeing the people in pods and taking back the real world, and shunned it in favour of more psuedo-intellectual claptrap dialogue and turning Morpheous from a courageous leader to a co -pilot to Will Smiths wife

City of Angels isnt actually that bad if you see the bootlegged cut that it was supposed to be like.

    Serenity kinda was a sequel.

Though another installment would be good.

Serenity was necessary though, since Fox cancelled Firefly halfway through the season and it was never fully resolved, great movie, one of the best sci-fi movies in years

I wish they hadn't made a sequel to The Butterfly Effect. Notable mention to The Crow as someone else has said.

Films I wish there was a sequel? Thats a toughie....

As I said in another thread I feel daredevil deserved a sequel.

Also would like to see a Clovefield sequel...I felt the idea of seeing the monster attack from another perspective would have been interesting.

I thought the film was bad enough from the perspective they showed it from the first time :P

Most sequels are unnecessary, and generally I dislike them. Shrek was brilliant, funny, original... why did we need two more movies? Also the last Matrix film was useless. The only sequel I enjoyed recently was Step Up 2:The Streets and that was because I never saw the first un and it's so bad it's good.
Cloverfield - no. It was good but can't they just leave it at that??

But I don't hate sequels as much as I hate REMAKES! Can we set up a separate thread for remakes actually?:pac:

Escape from New York, a dark, tense film with lots of gripping action and my favourite movie character of all time. Followed by its sequel Escape from L.A, same great character, same great actor but a completly different tone of film with lots of cheesey dialogue, terrible CGI and brainless one liners, completely ruined the original premise.

On the flip side I would have liked to see another sequel to the Gremlins which stayed true to the original.

Sequels that should not have been made:
Jurrassic Park 3 - I liked JP2 aka The Lost World, but 3 just sucked. The main reason for this was it was written and directed by a completely different team. I mean did they really think they could top Spielberg and Michael Crichton?
Fantastic Four 2 - I wasnt crazy about the first one but the second was just awful, and to bring the Silver Surfer into it? Blasphemy.
Oceans 12 - The plot was awful, and where the first had been a slick and polished piece of work, the second was just daft. Didnt see Oceans 13 so cant comment, but I am not very hopeful.

    Movies that should have sequels?

Thats a tricky one. Most movies should not have sequels, unless they are part of a pre-decided series like, say Back to the Future or Lord of the rings. But occasionally you do see something and think "I'd like to see more of that!". For me it would have to be a sequel to the "The Sum of all Fears/Patriot Games/Clear and present danger" franchise. There are plenty of Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan books still out there. While I liked the Ben affleck "reboot", Harrison Ford has shown in Indiana Jones 4 that he can still cut the mustard. So maybe put him in one of the books where Jack Ryan is a bit older.

I wish Dumb and Dumber didn't have a sequel. I wish Pirates of the Caribbean didn't have a sequel. I wish Highlander didn't have a sequel.

    Other question:

I wish Highlander had a good sequel to rival the original and I wish that The Mask had a sequel that wasn't god awful as the character and Jim Carrey were perfect.

Last I heard they were in talks about one but nothing has been finalised.

A movie that didn't deserve on was Blade 2....for me that was the highlight of the series and then they follow it with Blade Trinirty.

Incredibles is also deserving of a sequel.

I find when a great film has a terrible sequel that completely misses out on why the first was so great, it taints the original slightly. I want the original film to be a stand alone great movie and it to be left that way.

In saying that though I only think that way after iv seen the sequel and its bad:o:D

I think you're mistaken. They never made Indy 4 and they never will!!!!!

I'd kind of like to see a sequel or maybe prequel to Bladerunner. Granted, it'd be ruined by sloppy writing, over use of CGI and bad acting (I'd assume they'd get the latest teen sensation to be in it), but if they could keep the atmosphere of the original and just explore another character or life off-world, then it would be good.

I really hated X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was just terrible and really badly made. It's obvious that it was just being churned out to cash in on the character and to lead up to a few other character franchises. It's everything that's wrong with the movie industry.

You can't really complain about Blade 2 not needing a sequel, it did and in Goyer's original script for Blade 3 it had an absolutely fantastic premise and a damned good script to boot. It took place in the future after the human race had nearly been wiped out and Blade was waging the last war on the vampires. It's up there with Rob Zombie's script fort the Crow 2037 in the all time great outproduced scrips.

there definitly should have been a sequel for Zoolander, mean girls, ghost world, the craft! among others!!

and they should keep making more halloween movies, savage, and scream, and maybe a remake of nightmare on elm street!

and there should not have been a cruel intentions sequel, unless they were going to keep the same actors as the first!

Zoolander is supposed to be getting a sequel.A Mean Girls sequel would be little more than a remake of the original and Ghost World does not need a sequel. It's perfect as it is plus there is nowhere near enough financial motivation to make another. The Craft 2 would be exactly the same as the first, only with younger prettier girls in it.

No they should not. Zombie has said that he will not do a third Halloween film and only did the second one so he could guarantee financing for Tyrannosaur Rex. His upcoming throw back to 70s biker films.

Scream does not need a sequel, 2 were enough and while I enjoyed part 3 for Lance Henrickson's casting it was a piss poor film which was everything that the first film made fun of.

Remake of Nightmare on Elm Street on it's way and while it's not needed the casting of Jackie Earle Healy certainly makes it an interesting prospect.

Daredevil is on the slate for a reboot (next year I think). Personally I didn't think it was too bad & only picked it up in a double pack with Elektra for €5.99

I'm assuming that no one here has seen the far superior directors cut of Daredevil? The studio cut the film by 30 minutes in order to get a PG13 rating. It's a far superior film and well worth picking up, shame that the recent Blu Ray release of Daredevil was just the theatrical cut.

I know it's a "threequel" but they should let the 28 days later franchise fade away peacefully. I enjoyed 28 days later and 28 weeks later a lot (even if they were a few plotholes) but 28 months later seems a bit pointless imo. =/ It's apparently set in Russia, so are the characters going to be English or Russian? I don't really like when in films where they're in such and such a country but they all speak English instead of their native language. Really, they should just let it die peacefully instead of dragging it out for all its worth.

I hope they make more, it'll be interesting to see how far they can take it.

So 28 months later is a definite.

28 years later is the next unit of time, it's still possible to visualise, some sort of post apoclyptic mad max zombie film.

But where do they go from there, 28 decades mabey, 280 years.

After that would be 28 centuries later, a zombies in space film? They have really dug themselves a hole with the 28 gimmick, unless they do a prequel.

Bit of a strange one in the sense it was the sequel to the sequel but wish they had never made the Godfather 3 because it just added absolutely nothing to the series...

even stranger I would love to see another Godfather sequel...maybe filling in the years up to World War 2 when the Corleone's were consolidating after the boot legging years or the years after Michael consolidates his power in the Godfather 2. De Niro is about the right age for a pre World War 2 movie and Pacino could easily do the 70s version:)

I got the blu ray a few months back and it is the Directors cut on it.

But I agree the Directors cut really made a huge difference in the quality of the film.

I think they should have stopped at Saw 1 instead of cashing in with sequel after sequel!!!! First one was very good movie next few just runined it for me.

Suppose Pink Panther 2 with Steve Martin deserves an honorable mention too although they really shouldn't have made the first one either:D:D

South Park movie is one I would love a sequel too.....

Would like to see: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Bit of a marmite movie amongst fellow fans of the books, but I'd love to see that cast continue.

Unbreakable seemed to set itself up for a sequel. Liked the concept & the characters, back before M. Night ****ehawk disappeared up his own rectum.

The oft-mentioned Italian Job sequel, though maybe it's best left alone.

    Did not need:
    • Any X-Men movie after X-Men 2.
    • Any terminator movie after T2
Though technically I suppose they're franchise movies, rather than the quick cash-in cheapo follow-ups like the Blair Witch sequel. Ghastly.

I actually liked Butterfly Effect 2. I have the third one here too but I can't bring myself to watch it, even from casual flicking it looks horrible.

Starship Troopers 2 did not deserve a sequel, given how poor it was. Though it had promise, if they combined the cast and story from the 3rd movie with the CGI from the 2nd movie they'd have an awesome sequel. Instead we got 2 films that were completely lackluster in various departments that dragged any shred of decency out of either film for the most part.

    Robocop 3 was a farce...an utter farce.

Not exactly 'sequels', but the string of movies following Date Movie. I mean...what. Who finds those funny?!

Toxic Avenger IV needs a sequel. Tromas finest work.

I would love to see a sequel to Punisher: War Zone, an amazing adaption that was completely underrated.

Saw...oh god. Saw was great; Saw 2 was very good; Saw 3 was decent; Saw IV was a dismal disappointment; Saw V was basically flashbacks from the other Saws with a few hastily shot scenes to paste in between in order to be able to call it a new movie.
